3rd Grade Monday Memo-Ms. Hassell

Reading/Language Arts
Story for the week-The Tree House (Children can take reading book home in order to re-read
weekly story. Please make sure book is returned the following day.)
Reading-asking and answering relevant questions; compare and contrast
Language Arts-parts of speech (verbs). Spelling-words with /i/ sound. Writing-continue looking at the
writing process (prewriting stage).
Math
Place value-review reading and writing numbers up to the hundreds place. Introduce the hundred thousands place value.
(Identify values of digits in numbers through 999,999)
Chapter 1 Test on Thursday, September 3-(Use place value to read, write and describe value of whole numbers.)
Compare and order whole numbers. Begin rounding numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.
Religion
Chapter 1 God Speaks to Us We will begin reading in our Faith First Book. Going over vocabulary for this
chapter and discussing ways that God speaks to us, and how we are called to listen to Him. Review the Creed.
A list of prayers and dates were sent out last week with students. We wrote our prayer dates in our planners. We
will do some practice at school, but students are asked to recite the prayers at home as well.
Social Studies
Geography-identify compass rose, grid system, and symbols to locate places on maps and globes. Create and
interpret maps of places and regions that contain map elements, including a title, compass rose, legend, scale,
and grid system.
Science
Scientific investigation and reasoning-conduct classroom and outdoor investigations following
school and home safety procedures and environmentally appropriate practices.
Homework
Spelling – homework will be given Mondays and turned in on Friday. See homework sheet for directions. Use
attached notebook paper to complete homework. For added practice, use list 3.

Reading 20 minutes each night. (We will begin reading logs in October.)
Math homework given Monday-Thursday. Some work will be a take home practice sheet other times it will work
out of the math book. (Mrs. Avila)

Looking for Volunteers - We need someone that can take newspapers home OR to slip in the library to sort Mini. We also need
someone that can start handing out prizes on Friday. Please email me if you would like to volunteer.
Wednesdays are our ice-cream days for third grade. Ice-cream costs $0.75. Please speak to your child about whether or not
he/she may have ice-cream. I encourage students to eat their meal first before enjoying their ice-cream.
Planners-elementary planners have arrived. They are $5. We will be using this as a way of keeping our assignments
organized. The planner will be stamped daily (classroom behavior).
Music-Please ensure you have returned your child’s recorder/music book order form and money.
Spirit Days- (Please note the correction to last week’s memo) September 3 and 17 (Students should wear gray St. Mary’s tshirt, school shoes, white or black socks and black, brown or navy belt. Also jeans, knee-length shorts or skirts.)
September 5- Skate Night at Wheels 5:30-7:30
September 7- No School/Happy Labor Day!!!
September 9- All School Mass (Mass Uniform), PTC Meeting 5:30 (grades 2 and 3 will perform)
September 11- 1st Quarter Progress Reports will be sent Home, School Pictures (I am collecting money at this time)
September 12- Volleyball Tournament, McGregor
September 15 – 17- 6th Grade Retreat: Eagle’s Wings
September 21-ITBS TESTING begins
