As soon as you arrive in Denmark, you must submit documentation of your date of entry, such as a passport with an entry stamp, a boarding pass or an airplane ticket. The documentation must be sent to the Immigration Service or handed in in person at the Service Centre of the Immigration Service in Copenhagen. It is your responsibility for ensuring that the information has been submitted before your visa expires. Your visa is valid for four weeks after being issued. If you do not submit documentation of your date of entry before your visa expires, you will be in Denmark illegally, and will not be permitted to take the Immigration Test. If you arrive in Denmark three weeks after your visa was issued, you have one week to submit documentation of your date of entry. Once the Immigration Service has received this documentation, you will receive a letter informing you that you have the right to stay in Denmark while your application for family reunification is being processed. This type of stay is called a procedural stay. The letter will also contain practical information about the Immigration Test, as well as inform you that you must pass the Immigration Test within three months of entering Denmark. Since it can take up to two weeks to receive your test results, it is a good idea to take the test within 75 days of entering Denmark in order to make sure you do not remain in Denmark past the three month limit. Please note that passing the test requires thorough preparation. You decide when you are ready to take the test, but it is a good idea to start preparing before you receive the letter from the Immigration Service informing you that you need to take the test. Example: While in your home country, you have applied for a residence permit on the grounds of family reunification with your spouse/partner in Denmark. At the same time you have ordered the preparation packet for the Immigration Test and have begun to study. Meanwhile, you have begun an online Danish course. You talk with your spouse/partner, who helps you answer any questions you have about the educational film – and you are able to speak some Danish with your spouse/partner. If you have submitted your application for a Danish residence permit on the grounds of family reunification at the Immigration Service or a police station in Denmark, you can take the Immigration Test before being told by the Immigration Service that you need to. However, at that point you will not know whether you meet all the requirements for family reunification. If you do not meet the requirements, you application will normally be turned down and you will not need to take the Immigration Test. If you took the test and your application was later turned down, you would have unnecessarily paid the DKK 3,000 fee to take the test. For that reason, it is worth considering whether you should take the test before finding out whether you need to take it. Nevertheless, you should begin preparing well before you receive the letter from the Immigration Service informing you that you need to take the Immigration Test. But why should I prepare for the Immigration Test if it is possible that my application will be turned down and I won’t need to take it? It is correct that if your application is turned down, you will not need to take the Immigration Test. However, it is also important that you begin studying well in advance if you hope to be prepared to take the test within 75 days. Step 3: You take the Immigration Test If you pass the Immigration Test, the Immigration Service will inform you about what to do next. If you do not pass, you will be informed of the date when you must depart Denmark. If you pass the Immigration Test, you will receive a letter from the Immigration Service about what to do next. Your spouse/partner will be required to post a financial guarantee and you both will be required to sign a sworn declaration before you can receive a residence permit on the grounds of family reunification. If you do no pass the Immigration Test, you will receive a letter from the Immigration Service informing you of the date when you must depart Denmark. Moreover, because you did not pass the Immigration Test, your application for a residence permit on the grounds of family reunification will be turned down. Once you have departed Denmark, you can submit a new application for family reunification in your home country. The Immigration Service can answer any questions you may have about re-applying.
