WHAT DO I NEED TO DO IF I MISS A CONCERT In the
event of an emergency, the director must be contacted and an excused absence must
be established. Conflicts with regard to the definition of the term “excused absence”
will be resolved in consultation with both the Fine Arts Department Chair and the
ensemble director. Students whose absence from performance is deemed “excused”
are eligible to complete a make-up assignment to earn 85% of the points missed
(Note: No activity can replace the value and importance of live ensemble
performance. Thus, 15% of points missed due to absences of any kind are unable to
be made up.) These students must complete a short research paper that meets the
following guidelines:
a. Type a 2-3 page paper on any topic in music that interests you. Write about
the Beatles, the history of “Punk-Rock,” the mechanics of a Cello, or why The
Rolling Stones are the greatest musical group ever. As long as you are
passionate about the topic you will be fine.
b. Inform your audience about your topic while persuading them to see it from
your point of view.
c. Cite the resources you have consulted, and quote appropriately from your
source materials (internet, magazines, transcripts of TV interviews, etc.).
d. Plagiarism in any form will result in an automatic Zero (F) and the student’s
parents will be informed of the infraction.
e. Students will have two-weeks from the date of the missed performance to
complete the writing assignment before their performance grade is recorded as
a zero (exceptions to this time-line to be made on a case by case basis at the
discretion of the director. ie. Extended absence due to sickness.).
Should a student not be diligent in music preparation, or demonstrate a problem with
classroom discipline, the director is at liberty to remove the privilege of performance in
any given concert. A student’s failure to meet these obligations will have an unfavorable
effect upon his/her grade.
