Service Presentation “Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace…” - Saint Francis of Assisi Freshman Service August 29, 2013 Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen. Vision Through the Gospel mandate of Jesus Christ, we are called as Christians to take up our “basin and towel” to love and serve as Christ did. “For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:15) Through the Christian Service Program, all students of Padua Franciscan High School are offered the gifts of humility and poverty in spirit as they follow the example of Saint Francis in loving service to others through Jesus Christ. All students are also prepared to begin the challenge “to respond compassionately to the contemporary demands of a global society.” (Padua Franciscan High School Mission Statement) Please take out Parent-Student Acknowledgement Form All freshman will complete 20 hours of service. 10 hours of service to family 10 hours of service to Padua OR Church OR a combination of the two Schedule for hours due: 1st Quarter – October 15, 2013 (No first quarter service will be accepted after October 25th) 2 hours (minimum) of family 2 hours (minimum) of Padua/Church 2nd Quarter – January 8, 2014 (No second quarter service will be accepted after January 17th) 4 more hours (at 6 minimum) of family 4 more hours (at 6 minimum) of Padua/Church 3rd Quarter – March 18, 2014 (No third quarter service will be accepted after March 28th) 4 more hours (at 10 minimum) of family 4 more hours (at 10 minimum) of Padua/Church Freshman – Family/Church/School Areas: What counts as Service to Padua? After school cleaning crew (2 week commitment) – see Mr. DiRocco Helping a teacher – see them/schedule in advance (Mrs. Giulivo, Mrs. Green, Miss Zamborsky always a good place to start) Mrs. Shuman or Mrs. DeGirolamo (ask well in advance) Church? Parish carnivals, festivals – setting up, working with children, etc. Working with Sunday school children After school tutoring (we offer an opportunity through Padua @ St. Francis school) Attending mass, serving liturgy, singing in the choir DOES NOT COUNT. Practice for church choir, serving an extra mass because they needed a sub and you already went to mass – yes Family? It must be a family member you are assisting – not a neighbor or family friend Extra/Above and beyond – washing the kitchen floor, cleaning the family car, cleaning cupboards, doing the family laundry. Cleaning your room does not count, nor does doing the dishes. Chores are not service. Visiting an elderly relative (and you can help while you are there) ALL ARE INTENDED AS EXAMPLE. FOR CLARIFICATION, ASK MR. DIROCCO Reflect Each freshman will create a service reflection for the first semester. This reflection will be included in the Me Book project. Each freshman will create a service reflection for the 3rd quarter and the 4th quarter. Note - Service reflections are worth 10% of a student’s Theology grade Service must be completed in order to turn in a service reflection. Quarterly Service and Deadlines The student is responsible for his or her own service program. This is not the responsibility of your parents. Call and schedule yourself. Deadlines are in place for a reason and they will be enforced. Be responsible and manage your schedule accordingly. Once a quarter has ended no service from the prior quarter will be accepted for credit. Make sure forms are completely filled in and signed!!! * Service forms – available in Campus ministry and on the Padua Website. This whole presentation will be made available on the Padua website, including all necessary forms. Important Notes 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Christian service is a Pass/Fail grade and will be marked as such on your quarter and semester report cards. As soon as you have served the full 20 hours, you are done. (In other words, you can get them all done in the first quarter if you choose) You may turn in forms at any time to Campus Ministry. Questions?
