PARABLE OF
THE PRODIGAL SON
FORGIVENESS
AND
RECONCILIATION
1. What did Yagil do that
created a need for
reconciliation?
• Yagil no longer wants
to follow father’s
‘absurd’ rules, instead
he want to satisfy his
need to have fun
• He takes the
inheritance his father
saved for him and
leaves home to pursue
his ‘wants’.
2. What brought about
Yagil’s conversion (change of
heart)?
 famine hits the land,
food becomes very
expansive
 Yagil runs out of
money to buy food, so
he gets a job feeding
pigs
 He becomes so
desperate for food, that
he contemplates eating
pig food
3. What was the
significance of Yagil’s job
feeding the pigs?
 The ‘feeding of the pigs”
experience needed to
occurs in order for
Yagil to experience
conversion
 Feeding pigs is Yagil’s
lowest point in his
journey.
 He sinks so low that he
contemplates eating the
pig’s food.
Jews are instructed in the bible not
to eat animals with split hoofs, such
as swine, and animals or birds that
feed off of dead carcuses.
4. How does Yagil change?
 He realized that his father
was a good man and very
fair boss.
 His father would never
treat a person like
something less than an
animal.
 He also acknowledges that
he, Yagil, was selfish,
ungrateful, he did not
appreciate what he had
5. Could reconciliation have happened if
Yagil had not changes? Why or why not?
 The reconciliation will
not occur without
conversion.
 For reconciliation to
occur both parties, the
father and son, need to
have the willingness and
commitment to mend
their broken
relationship.
6. When did the father forgive Yagil?
 Father has forvines Yagil long
lime ago
 Yagil is contrite (Yagil admits
that he was wrong and he is
sorry for want he has done).
 Yagil makes a confession (He is
prepared to correct the wrong
that he caused).
7. When did reconciliation occur?
 Reconciliation occurs when
father accepts Yagil’s sincere
confession and correction.
 Father and son finally come to
live in harmony again.
8. What does the reconciliation mean for
Yagil?
It means, his
relationship with
his father has
been restored.
He learns that his
father has
unconditional
love and
forgiveness.
9. What would a reconciliation between
Yagil and Samuel require?
Samuel needs to experience
a conversion to help him
realize that Yagil has
changed,
he need to realize the
importance of his
relationship with his
brother.
10. In what ways have the family
relationship changed?
• From this point on,
Yagil will have a
greater appreciation
of father’s love.
• However, Yagil and
Samuel relation has
been broken. It will
require a path towards
reconciliation.
11. How do you feel about the people in the
story?
I feel comforted knowing
that father has
unconditional love and
forgiveness for his
children.
12. What are the 3c’s of conversion and what
does each require? Conversion requires:
(1) Contrition (or sorrow): the person
must see it was wrong what she/he
has done and is genuinely sorry.
(2) (2) Confession: person must admit
and take responsibility for their
action.
(3) (3) Correction: person must do
what he/she can to repair the harm
