What did Yagil do that created a need for reconciliation? • Yagil no longer wants to follow father’s ‘absurd’ rules, instead he want to satisfy his need to have fun • He takes the inheritance his father saved for him and leaves home to pursue his ‘wants’. 2. What brought about Yagil’s conversion (change of heart)? famine hits the land, food becomes very expansive Yagil runs out of money to buy food, so he gets a job feeding pigs He becomes so desperate for food, that he contemplates eating pig food 3. What was the significance of Yagil’s job feeding the pigs? The ‘feeding of the pigs” experience needed to occurs in order for Yagil to experience conversion Feeding pigs is Yagil’s lowest point in his journey. He sinks so low that he contemplates eating the pig’s food. Jews are instructed in the bible not to eat animals with split hoofs, such as swine, and animals or birds that feed off of dead carcuses. 4. How does Yagil change? He realized that his father was a good man and very fair boss. His father would never treat a person like something less than an animal. He also acknowledges that he, Yagil, was selfish, ungrateful, he did not appreciate what he had 5. Could reconciliation have happened if Yagil had not changes? Why or why not? The reconciliation will not occur without conversion. For reconciliation to occur both parties, the father and son, need to have the willingness and commitment to mend their broken relationship. 6. When did the father forgive Yagil? Father has forvines Yagil long lime ago Yagil is contrite (Yagil admits that he was wrong and he is sorry for want he has done). Yagil makes a confession (He is prepared to correct the wrong that he caused). 7. When did reconciliation occur? Reconciliation occurs when father accepts Yagil’s sincere confession and correction. Father and son finally come to live in harmony again. 8. What does the reconciliation mean for Yagil? It means, his relationship with his father has been restored. He learns that his father has unconditional love and forgiveness. 9. What would a reconciliation between Yagil and Samuel require? Samuel needs to experience a conversion to help him realize that Yagil has changed, he need to realize the importance of his relationship with his brother. 10. In what ways have the family relationship changed? • From this point on, Yagil will have a greater appreciation of father’s love. • However, Yagil and Samuel relation has been broken. It will require a path towards reconciliation. 11. How do you feel about the people in the story? I feel comforted knowing that father has unconditional love and forgiveness for his children. 12. What are the 3c’s of conversion and what does each require? Conversion requires: (1) Contrition (or sorrow): the person must see it was wrong what she/he has done and is genuinely sorry. (2) (2) Confession: person must admit and take responsibility for their action. (3) (3) Correction: person must do what he/she can to repair the harm
