Course Description: The purpose of this course is to enable students to: develop an understanding of mathematical
principles and an appreciation of mathematics as a logical and coherent subject; acquire a range of mathematical skills,
particularly those which will enable them to use applications of mathematics in the context of everyday situations and of
other subjects they may be studying; develop the ability to analyze problems logically, recognize when and how a
situation may be represented mathematically, identify and interpret relevant factors and, where necessary, select an
appropriate mathematical method to solve the problem; use mathematics as a means of communication with emphasis
on the use of clear expression; acquire the mathematical background necessary for further study in this or related
subjects.
Standards Covered:

Class Expectations:






Students should come to class ready to learn.
Students are expected to be in their seats when the tardy bell rings.
Tardiness will be documented.
The third tardy students will receive a detention.
The fourth tardy students will receive a referral.
Students will remain in their seats and not leave until dismissed.
Respect for your peers and the teacher is demanded, and in turn you will receive that same respect.
Students are expected to come in for extra help when needed.
Grade Policy:
Grades will be broken down into Units, Learning Checks, Writing Assignments, and Quarterly Assessment. Each unit will
have a different weight which will be determined and Learning Checks, Writing Assignments, and Quarterly Assessments
will all be valued at 10%. Within a unit you will have assignment grades weighted at .5 and tests will be weighted at 2,
which means a test is four times the weight of an assignment.
Grading on Tests, Learning Checks (Quizzes) and Quarterly Assessments will be done on a Mastery Scale. Students who
do not receive an initial mastery level score on a unit test are allowed and required to make up the assessment as long
as they meet the requirements set forth. The following are the levels of mastery and corresponding grade percentages.
Advanced Mastery

The requirements to retake a unit test are:
1. The student must watch the tutorial videos and complete a writing assignment.
2. The student must come in for a tutoring session.
3. The student must redo the learning check to see if they are mastered the required topic.
Students must keep all graded assignments in a 3-ring binder and this binder will be graded periodically. Students will
have a chance to earn bonus points on assignments and different activities.
Homework Policy:
 Students are required to complete all homework and class work assignments. There is a direct correlation
between doing your assignments and the success you will have in this class.
 Every homework assignment will be checked for completeness on the day it is due. All work must be shown to
receive full credit.
 The teacher is lenient when grading homework. Substantial credit is not denied for errors committed in the
work. Students are ALLOWED & REQUIRED to fix their mistakes while we are going over assignments in class.
 No late work will be accepted for any reason. Work is considered late once the period has started.
Attendance/Make-up Policy: The discussions we have in class can’t be duplicated, so good attendance is essential to
your success. You will have 3 days to make up any work missed from an excused absence. It is your responsibility to
check the website to find out about daily activities and assignments or check your email to find out what you missed. If
you check with me please make sure it is before school or after school. During class discussion is not an appropriate
time. If you miss a test, you will need to make arrangements to take it before or after school, within a week of your
absence.
