What did The English do when they got here • 3 types of colonies (Developed between the 1500 - 1800. – Northern (New England) – Middle – Southern – Frontier land • Northern Colonies were fisherman • Middle and Southern were Farmers (about 90% of the New Colonists were farmers Colonial Social Classes • Upper Class or Aristocrats • New England Colony Merchants and Clergyman • Middle and Southern Colonies - those who owned large amounts of land. Colonial Social Classes Cont. • Middle Class - in all colonies • Clergy, Farmers, Shop-keepers, Ships Captains, Carpenters, and Blacksmiths. Colonial Social Classes Cont. • Redemptioners - a person from your • Lower Classes family or wealthy person would pay for Servants your trip over in exchange for 2-4 years service. • Indentured servants - Usually a single man between 18-30 whose passage was paid by a wealthy individual in exchange for 7-10 years service. • Slaves - the first blacks were actually indentured servants brought to Jamestown in 1619, but people began to keep them as slaves. French and Indian War • Colonization of the New World led the French and English to war against one another. • The Indians helped the French because there were a lot fewer French than English • England was doing poorly in the war until it asks the colonist for help (they told the colonist that if they won the colonist would get to expand further west). • The colonists helped and the English won.
