Suggestions for good grades on element quizzes: Study element nightly (use flash cards, mix them up, study with a parent/sibling) Quizzes will be 10 to 20 elements long and you will have only 5 minuets to complete Element quizzes will be EVERY FRIDAY (unless other wise stated in class) Know the full group names Write clearly (if I can’t read it I can’t give you credit for know it) Use the correct case (upper case for 1st letter, lower case for 2nd letter) Small spelling errors won’t count against you BUT if the spelling significantly changes the pronunciation of the element it will be counted incorrect. For polyatomic ions know the name, the correct formula and charge Any element or polyatomic from previous weeks can reappear on more than one element quiz (expect the hard one’s more than once) Week 1 elements: Group 1A name: Alkali Metals H -- hydrgen Li -- lithium Na -- sodium K -- potassium Rb – rubidium Cs -- cesium Fr -- francium Polyatomic ions: ClO3-1 chlorate NO3-1 --- nitrate Week 2 elements: Group 3 A name: Boron Family B -- Boron Al -- aluminum Ga -- gallium In – indium Tl --Thallium Polyatomic ions: OH-1 – hydroxide MnO4-1 – permanganate Group 4A name: Carbon Family C – carbon Si – silicon Ge – germanium Sn – tin Pb – lead Polyatomic ions: Cyanide – CN-1 Acetate – C2H3O2-1 Week 3 Elements: Group 5a: Nitrogen Family N – nitrogen P – phosphorus As – Arsenic Sb – Antimony Bi – Bismuth Week 4 Elements: Group 6a: Oxygen Family O – oxygen S – sulfur Se – selenium Te – Tellurium Po – polonium Group 2A name: Alkaline Earth Metals Be -- Beryllium Mg -- magnesium Ca -- calcium Sr -- strontium Ba -- barium Ra -- radium Polyatomic ions: peroxide – O2-2 Ammonium NH4+1 Polyatomic ions: carbonate -- CO3-2 Sulfate -- SO4-2 Week 5 Elements: Group 7a: Halogen Family F – fluorine Cl – chlorine Br – bromine I – iodine At – astatine Group 8a: Noble Gases He – helium Ne – neon Ar – argon Kr – Krypton Xe – xenon Rn – radon Polyatomic ions: CrO4-2 -- chromate Cr2O7-2 -- dichromate Week 6 Elements: Groups 1b to 8b: Transition Metals -- Elements 21 to 30 Sc -- scandium Mn – manganese Ti – titanium Fe – Iron V – vanadium Co – Cobalt Cr – chromium Ni – Nickel Polyatomic Ions: PO3-3 -- phosphite PO4-3 -- phosphate Week 7 Elements: Groups 1b to 8b: Transition Metals Ag – silver Hg – mercury Au – gold Ac – actinium Polyatomic Ions: H3O+1 – hydronium Week 8 elements: W – tungsten Pt – platinum NO2-1 – nitrite SiO3-2 – silicate Cu – Copper Zn -- zinc ClO2-1 – chlorite Ir – iridium Os – osmium SO3-2 -- sulfite ClO4-1 – perchlorate Additional Elements may be added later in the year.
