Motion and Forces
Unit 1 Practice: Forces (2)
Name: ________________________
Date: ______________ Period: ___
Sketch a free body diagram and find the net force for the following objects: (list magnitude and
direction)
1) A car being pushed at a constant speed along the ground with a force of 3,000 N.
2) A 45 N box being pulled vertically with a force of 56 N.
3) Two children are pushing on a door in opposite directions, the first to the right with a force of 25
N, and the second to the left with a force of 17 N.
Sketch a free body diagram, find the net force and the acceleration each object experiences: (list
magnitude and direction)
4) A 10,000 N car whose engine is applying 3,000 N of force, while the net effect of the friction and
wind resistance is 1,940 N. (Assume car is moving on level ground.)
5) An airplane weighing 47,000 N flies at constant altitude into a head wind producing a drag force
of 4,000 N, while the engines are applying 27,000 N of thrust.
6) Consider an average lion weighing around 1,000 N being lifted upward by a helicopter with a
force of 2,300 N so it can be transported to a nature preserve.
7) A crane is capable of applying 250,000 N of force directly upward, consider a situation where the
crane lifts a single crate weighing 1,200 N with maximum force.
8) Consider the situation in problem seven above, what would happen if the crane lifted 20 crates
identical to the one described above?
9) Consider the situation in problem seven above, what would happen if the crane lifted 100 crates
identical to the one described above?
10) Consider the situation in problem seven above, what would happen if the crane lifted 200 crates
identical to the one described above?
