Students mark whether they agree or disagree with each statement. Subject: New Mexico’s Indian Peoples; How Indians got the right to vote, and the Blue Lake story. Guided reading activity on pages 270 – 271 describing the account of Miguel Trujillo and his efforts to gain voting rights for the Indians in 1948. Also, the story of the Taos Indians fighting for their claim on Blue Lake. Students will respond to the following questions using the RACE format. 1. Describe the process Miguel Trujillo went through to gain the right to vote. 2. Describe the political fight the Taos Indians went through to gain protection and control of Blue Lake. Give an example of how your rights may be violated at school and the process you would go through in order to have your right protected.
