RESEARCH NOTES Example Question Example Notes Example Summary (in your words) What was life like in _______________ under colonial control? ● The East India Company was more powerful than the emperor himself and it controlled some 60 percent of India (TCI World Connections Ch 25, 2015) ● In an effort to raise as much money as possible, contracts for payment of land revenue were raised to a high level. Many peasants were forced to leave their lands, and during the 1820s and 1830s India experienced a financial crisis. Taxes on the Indians were very high, and demands for such products as cotton cloth and indigo declined, causing a loss of revenue. The Company had more power than the leaders of the Indian people and used that power to make themselves rich. Many Indian’s lives were hard during this time. Control by the EIC lead to farmers losing their jobs, famine and people becoming upset. Indians did not have the right to rule themselves in their own government and the whole government was all controlled by the EIC.
