Marta Vieira da Silva: “Pelé in a Skirt”
Marta Vieira da Silva, known simply as Marta, is without a doubt the best female soccer player in Brazil, but she may also be the
greatest female player of all time, say many experts. Marta has won the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award for five
consecutive years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) and has two silver medals from the 2004 and 2008 Olympic games.
Born on February 19, 1986 in Dois Riachos, Alagoas, Marta didn’t have an easy childhood. Her mother worked constantly so Marta
spent a lot of time at her grandmother’s house. After school, she played soccer in the street with her cousins, easily playing as well as
the boys. At age 14, she moved to Rio de Janeiro to play for a soccer club and then spent several years playing for the Swedish team,
Umea IK. Marta now plays for Western New York Flash, a team in the United States.
Marta is dark-skinned, well-built and has a beautiful smile. At 1.63 meters, she’s not as tall as most professional women athletes but,
as top-scorer on nearly every team she’s on, her short stature isn’t a problem. Brazilian fans compare her to the soccer great, Pelé,
calling her “Pelé in a skirt.” It must be true – even Pelé agrees with the comparison. “I’ve seen her ability for a long time. She’s one of
the greatest players of female soccer,” said Pelé.
Marta hopes more young women will be able to succeed in soccer in the future. Right now, female soccer players in Brazil can’t rise in
the sport quickly or easily. Says Marta of Brazil, “There’s prejudice and a lack of options to work and develop. All of this gets in the
way.”
Despite her many important awards, championships and medals, there’s one thing that she hasn’t won: a gold medal in the Olympics.
“What I really dream of is becoming a world champion with the Brazilian national team and exchanging the silver medals we won at the
last two Olympics for gold. I know we’ve got the ability to do that,” Marta said in a recent interview.

TEXT
No room at the top
One day in May 2012, 150 tourists were waiting in line. They weren’t waiting for a ride, and they weren’t at Disney World.
These people were climbing Mount Everest in Nepal – and they were waiting to get to the top.
What has happened to the world’s tallest mountain? Back in 1953, two men, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary,
reached the 8,848-meter summit of the wild, unexplored mountain for the first time. The news traveled around the world,
and they were celebrated as heroes. Since then, thousands of people have followed them with the goal of reaching the
top, and it’s a very different experience today.
Climbers must still have the necessary skills, but Everest is not the challenge that it was back in the 1950s. At the base
camp, there are now hot showers and internet access. If they can afford it, today’s climbers can also pay for guides from
a dedicated tour company. An organized trip can cost up to $50,000, and as a result the mountain has become a popular
destination for rich businesspeople. Sadly, the arrival of so many keen climbers has produced a lot of trash and long
delays for those waiting to reach the top.
In addition, the cold and sometimes stormy weather can be very dangerous. If a storm comes, people attempting the
climb should turn back, but unfortunately determined climbers often continue despite the weather. Not all climbers are
fortunate enough to reach the top. There are several deaths on Everest each year.
These days, Mount Everest is all about celebrity. Everyone knows what Mount Everest is, but few people know Cho Oyu,
the sixth highest mountain in the world, 20 kilometers west of Mount Everest, or Mount Denali, the highest mountain peak
in the United States, also known as Mount McKinley. Serious climbers know that there are still exhilarating experiences
out there, but to find them, you have to leave Everest, with its reporters and crowds behind.

A it is expensive to climb Mount Everest.
B it is now a good time to climb Mount Everest.
C many people fail to climb Mount Everest.

3 Only professional climbers have reached the top of Everest.
A None of the statements.
B 1 only.
C 1 and 2.
D 2 only.
E 3 only.

THE WORLD AT HIS FEET
They call him “Alex the duck” but it’s not because of his looks. Alexandre Rodrigues da Silva, or Pato, gets his
nickname from his home town of Pato Branco, Brazil. Actually, he’s good-looking, well-built and quite tall, with curly hair.
But more importantly, he’s a terrific soccer player, and the latest young Brazilian star to succeed in Europe.
So Pato is talented, gorgeous, rich, and famous. People might say he has everything. But when younger, his future
wasn’t so bright. When he was ten, he broke his arm. The doctors looked at his X-rays and found a tumor. Such tumors
can easily become cancerous, so Pato needed an operation right away. But his family couldn’t afford to pay the medical
bill. Luckily, they were good friends with a doctor, and he operated for free. Pato recovered fully.
Right now, Pato plays for AC Milan. He’s so good that he could play for any of the best teams in Europe. In the
future, he may move to Real Madrid or Manchester United.
3
What makes him so good? Well, he’s as strong as Ronaldo, and he thinks as quickly as Kaká. “he can do things with
the ball that other players can’t imagine,” said an Italian journalist. “He thinks rapidly and when he has a scoring chance
he finishes precisely. The world is certainly at his feet.
Although he’s a lot younger than other soccer stars like Robinho and Kaká, he already has many of the things they
have – for example, a beautiful girlfriend. Her name is Stephany Brito, and she’s a famous Brazilian actress.
They met on the internet. It can’t be easy for them, because they live on different continents. It must be difficult for
them to have such a long-distance relationship.
At the moment, Pato isn’t as famous as Kaká. However, in a few years, it’s likely that he won’t be able to go out for a
quick meal. Fans and photographers will follow him everywhere. Fame comes at a price! There’s no doubt that Pato will be
able to cope with these difficulties. He overcame a serious illness in the past, and his future now looks bright indeed.
