INTER-AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO BAYAMON CAMPUS
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Fluid Mechanics Laboratory: MECN 3110
Experiment No 7
A. Title:
Centrifugal Pump Characteristics
B. Equipment:
GH5 Series Tutor Pumps and Turbines, Thermometer.
C. Main Goal:
Perform experiments to determine the characteristic curves for a
centrifugal pump operating at three different speeds and calculate
efficiencies to determine the optimal operation points of the pump.
D. Prior Requirements:
1. Understand how the equipment operates as well as which are its parts.
2. Discuss with your instructor how you plan to achieve the proposed goals, indicate which
measurements and instruments are needed. Design a data sheet with a simplified calculation
sequence for later use.
E. Procedure:
1. Turn on the motor switch and control the motor speed to 2000 rpm and let water flow with
valve open to the maximum.
2. Take ten different readings, decreasing the water flow, of inlet and outlet pump pressure,
voltage and current in the motor and water temperature.
3. Repeat the procedure changing the motor speed to 1500 and 1000 rpm.
4. Compute and tabulate the values of volumetric flow, work in the pump and in the motor,
efficiency and pump head.
5. Plot values of pressure head in the pump versus flow rate for each motor speed in one graph.
Also, in each point evaluate the efficiency and draw isoefficiency lines.
6. Write a formal laboratory report; submit it to your instructor.
