Improvisation workshop focusing on the types of improvisation used throughout Latin Music with reference to motifs,
melody, jazz harmony and chord extensions used.
Video performances from Youtube followed by a discussion of improvisation and compositional techniques used and
their relevance to topic of the Music of Latin America.
Workshop on the elements of Jazz harmony in Latin Music and any stylistically relevant chord extensions
Improvisation and performance activity based on the stylistic elements of Latin Music using tone colour and pitch
Experiment and evaluate as a class with various ways in which improvisation can be manipulated and developed to suit
the style of Latin Music.
Improvisation assessment/activity whereby students are able to select from various stimuli that is relevant to the topic
and have half an hour to prepare, the next half an hour is spent going around a circle to which all students will have a turn
at improvising.
Possible - if necessary - viva voce on composition and improvisation.
Class discussion and summary of the main characteristics that define the Music of Latin America and its various styles
Guided aural activity using music from the works of Antonio Carlos Jobim an Joao Gilberto to assist student aural
awareness and use of specific concepts of music and to introduce students to the performance works
Musicology worksheet, which includes references to aural assessment, this is to help familiarise the students with the
content.
Students to identify the concepts of music that composers: Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto have explored
throughout their music and report findings and observations to teacher.
Create a timeline to map the emergence of the various composers and styles of Latin Music from 1945 to 1990.
In-Depth research on Latin composer of choice and compile a short biography and list of most popular/influential
compositions.
Compile a list of the main characteristics/elements/musical of that composer’s style. Identify these features in the work
you are playing and present a short report to the class.
Class to make a chart of all the musically stylistic devices used in Latin Music and come to a conclusion about the most
influential devices used.
Divide class into 5 groups, based on styles of Latin Music, have students select one or two of the devices from their
respective style and then explore and improvise a short work using these devices. This should not be notated, but
performed when ready for the rest of the class.
Class and performers to evaluate what was successful about the exercise and discuss possible ways of improving the
composition leading to a complete stylistically correct improvisation
Class ensemble performance of selected works for a larger ensemble as further model for composition and performance
Set students an activity to write up findings of the development of Latin music from 1945 – 1990 and its influence on
music today.
Students allocated time to work independently on their compositions for improvisation assessment using relevent
instrumentation/notation software to assist them, teacher to move among students and monitor progress. (Note: This
can take up to 2 periods and possible to allocate relevant tasks for homework)
Compose and perform an improvisation to a 32 bar Bossa Nova Piece – using the improvisation techniques from the
