September 3rd, 2015 Dear Parents-Guardians: I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Grade 9 French program at St. Mary’s Academy. Your child has been given a tentative outline for the year and is asked to keep this outline in his/her binder. Please take time to review this outline with your child. In recent years there has been a great deal of change dealing with the way Core French is taught in the classroom. No longer are students required to focus entirely on written French; instead they are given opportunities to speak the language. This is known as the “neuro-linguistic” approach. Students will learn new sentence structures orally (with a great deal of practice) before reading and writing similar sentence structures. Reading and writing still have their place in the French classroom, but it is done at the appropriate times. My goal as your daughter’s/son’s French teacher is to provide a safe classroom environment in which they feel free to take risks with the language. When preparing my lessons this is always a consideration. As a parent I would like you to reinforce with your child the idea that participation in French class is extremely important and if they make an effort to participate they will notice a great deal of improvement. I look forward to working with your child and hope that he/she has a successful year. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at any time.
