SYLLABUS Stage 9 Mathematics 2015-2016 Work Hard ~ Be Kind ~ Be Smart INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION: Cj Raidy BAE in Secondary Education Mathematics MEd in Educational Technology Cj.Raidy@asu.edu (480)-727-5352 http://craidyasuprep.weebly.com COURSE DESCRIPTION: Stage 9 Mathematics is a year-long course aligned with the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics and the Cambridge International Secondary 1, Stage 9 Mathematics. This mathematics curriculum is presented in six content areas: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measure, Handling Data and Problem Solving. The first five content areas are all underpinned by problem solving. Mental strategies are also a key part of the number content. Together, these two areas form a progressive step in preparing students for entry onto IGCSE level courses. This curriculum focuses on principles, patterns systems, functions and relationships so that learned can apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject. GOALS: To enable students to: make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; reason abstractly and quantitatively; construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others; model with mathematics; use appropriate tools strategically; look for and make use of structure; look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning; apply principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships to develop a holistic understanding of the subject; develop learners who are confident, responsible, innovative and engaged; engage in an active and creative learning journey. ASSESSMENT STANDARDS & OBJECTIVES: The student will demonstrate mastery of these objectives. These objectives will be visible in the student’s Power School grade book. * Cambridge International Curriculum: Secondary I- Stage 9 * Arizona’s Common Core Standards for Grade 8 Math ASU PREPARATORY ACADEMY EXPECTATIONS: * Respect yourself * Respect others * Respect this place ABSENT/LATE WORK: *Due Dates: Effort and mastery assignments must be turned in on the due date. If a student does not attempt or does not turn in an assignment or assessment, the teacher will enter a “0” in the grade book. See the following policies regarding late work, absent work, and retakes/redos. *Late Work: Students will be given "3 Late Passes" per quarter, per class. These will allow students to turn in assignments after the due date for full credit. After students have used up their passes, all late work not submitted on the due date will be a zero. As an incentive, any unused late passes may be returned to the teacher at the end of the quarter for an extra credit point each. Teachers will either distribute passes, track this on a paper roster, or record late passes electronically in grade book. *Absent Work: Students will work with their teacher to turn in work after being absent as promptly as possible. Any tests or quizzes will be made up on “Make-up Monday” in Mrs. Raidy’s room during Foundation on the Monday after the absence. *Retakes/Redos: Students may retake or redo any major assignments or assessments one time (additional opportunities are at teacher discretion). In order to be given the opportunity for retakes/redos, students must attend Foundation tutoring with the teacher. After the satisfactory tutoring session(s) have been completed, the teacher will submit the retake/redo to Mrs. Raidy for the student to attend the following “Make-up Monday.” Teachers also reserve the right to award credit at the tutoring session. It is up to the teacher’s discretion whether assignments given a zero after three late passes qualify for the retake/redo policy. *Effort: Assignments that are merely practice or completion credit will not count towards a student’s overall mastery grade. Rather, teachers will record them as effort assignments. Students will earn a course effort grade each quarter. *Mastery: It is important for students, families, and teachers to note that the goal for each student is mastery of the standards. All of the aforementioned policies were designed with this goal in mind. All attempts at mastery will be given a minimum of 50%. PLAGIARISM: It is the responsibility of the student to follow the ASU Prep Way with honesty in regard to the authorship of the work that he/she presents as his/her own. Consequences for plagiarism will be in accordance with the ASU Preparatory student code of conduct. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: * * * * * No food, drink, gum, or candy in class. Closed water bottles only! Be prepared to write every day. Remain in assigned seat unless directed otherwise. Pencil sharpening, throwing away papers, etc. will take place prior to the start of class. Once you have entered the classroom, you are in “learning mode” and will begin completing the daily seatwork. * Socializing/horseplay will not take place within the classroom. * With a limited number of minutes in the class and many objectives, we must work diligently at all times. * Passes from class will be limited. Students need to be in class at all times in order to effectively participate. * In an effort to “go green,” students will be required to participate in online assignments occasionally. GRADING INFORMATION: Students enrolled at ASU Preparatory Academy will receive two letter grades in each of their courses. One of the letter grades is an academic grade demonstrates student mastery of the course objectives. The second grade is an effort grade that reflects attendance, participation, discussions, or completion of practice assignments. Both of the letter grades will adhere to the following grading scale, but only the academic grade will be reflected on the student’s final transcript and included in the grade point average. A* Exceeds Plus 97 – 100 A Exceeds 90 – 96 B Meets 80 – 89 C Approaches 70 – 79 D Approaches 60 – 69 F Falls Far Below 50 – 59 Students will monitor their progress throughout the year in their Data Notebooks. They will share this data with their families during ILPs.
