Peer Visits/School visits update
 J.J. provided a summary of the teachers that have volunteered to act as a mentor on
various Physical Education topics.
 Decision made to keep the googledoc. form open for registration until Sept. 2015.
MPETA to publish document online in October 2015.

Every year the document will be opened for a select length of time to add new teacher
contacts.
MPETA may provide funding at a later date for teacher release time.

 See agenda item 13 for date and location changes for future MPESA meetings.

Student Leadership Conference – Nathan
 Brandon University hosted students from BU, U of M, U of W, and U of R.
 Variety of sessions including Physical Literacy and student led activities.
 Great opportunity for the students to network
 University of Winnipeg to host in 2016.
5.
Gym inspections – Dean R.
 Frontier SD is examining options for gym inspections as it is extremely expensive (travel costs and
gym inspections). Looking for SD input.
 St. James SD: Divisional maintenance dept. does all inspections. Divisional maintenance budget
covers all repairs
 WPG SD: Contract out inspections. Divisional budget covers cost of inspections. Structural
repairs covered by division. Equipment repairs covered by schools.
 RETSD: Contract out inspections. Divisional budget cover cost of inspections. Repairs covered by
SD.
 PTSD: Contract out inspections. Divisional budget cover cost of inspections. Repairs covered by
SD.
 An option is to train Frontier SD employees to conduct inspections. Are there checklists available?
 MB Safety document (Appendix F).
 Dean will send a further email asking for sample copies of gym inspection checklists.

Relationship b/n Physical Activity and Student Engagement – Geoff
 Is the membership interested in having Kathy Isaac (teacher in PTSD) present at a future MPESA
meeting about her master’s in the area of physical activity and student engagement?
 Geoff to ask Kathy to prepare a half-hour to one hour presentation for the March meeting.

Physical Literacy updates – Grant
 Agenda item moved to March meeting.

Leasing fitness equipment – JJ
 SJSD is examining the financial implication of leasing vs. purchasing cardio equipment for their
fitness centres.
 After some research, only OP leases equipment.

SJSD has contacted two Fitness supply companies and has asked for lease vs. purchase pricing on
cardio equipment.
Information to be sent out when available. With option of other SDs to opt-in to possibly reduce
cost.

Low Cost Bike Helmet Initiative - Guinness World Record Attempt
 Deadline for registration Feb 17th.

Essential Learnings
 Email Paul divisional essential learnings. Paul to use/share in future presentations.
c.
MPETA/PHE Canada (Ray/Ralph)
 Budget for additional (extra) PE funding for National Conference Banff has been
exhausted.
 Intramural grants have all been allocated.
 Basketball Manitoba was unaware of the concern about the BB workshop on SAGE day.
They are open to including the BB workshop as part of the program as long as the
participants (non-PE) do not have to pay the SAGE fee.
 MHSAA transgender draft policy to be voted on at Feb 9th meeting.
 PHE Canada national conference earlybird registration deadline is Feb 15th.

a. Athletic Directors and Masters April 24
 MHSAA offering courses geared towards athletic directors which can be used as credits
towards Master program. Email sent by MHSAA last week. Attachment included with
minutes.

Transgender students and athletics
 Transgender students and physical education/athletics is a developing topic which
requires further discussion.
 Questions around language, facilities, team composition and competition, MHSAA policy.
