TYPES OF BEHAVIOR Overt vs. Covert Conscious vs. Unconscious Rational vs. Irrational Normal vs. Abnormal Voluntary vs. Involuntary Simple vs. Complex OVERT VS. COVERT Overt behavior those that are observable by others and can be seen readily Ex. Dancing, Acting, Singing, etc. Covert behavior – those that are internal in nature. Hence, not readily observable and cannot be seen. These type of behavior comes in the forms of feelings, thoughts, and motives Ex. Happiness, Learning, Imaginations, Day dreams, etc. CONSCIOUS VS. UNCONSCIOUS Conscious Behavior any behavior that the person is aware of. Ex. walking, eating, listening to the instructor, memorizing lessons in preparation of exams, etc. Unconscious Behavior – any behavior that the person is not fully aware of Ex. mannerisms, playing or flipping of hair while talking, shaking of the legs while sitting, biting your fingers, playing, with your pen while listening to your teacher’s discussion, etc. RATIONAL VS. IRRATIONAL Rational Behavior any act, thought processes, or feelings that is done with valid and logical reasons. Ex. Confronting by talking out to an employee who accidentally destroyed the office printer. Irrational Behavior I any act, thought processes, or feelings that is done without any valid and logical reason, or any act, thought processes, or feelings that is not congruent to the cause such behavior. Ex. 1 (no reason) Getting angry to an employee who did not do anything wrong. Ex. 2 (reason is not congruent to reaction) Killing an employee to who accidentally destroyed the office printer. VOLUNTARY VS. INVOLUNTARY Voluntary Behavior means that you have free will and are able to make a conscious decision to take a specific action. Ex. Kissing your boyfriend or girlfriend, etc. Unconscious Behavior means you have no conscious control of the action Ex. Increased/ decreased pulse rate and heart beat, blushing, digestion, etc. SIMPLE VS. COMPLEX Simple Behavior an involuntary response to a certain stimulus or behaviors brought by accomplishing simple tasks. Ex. Saying “Hello” when you answer a telephone call, etc. Complex Behavior means you have conscious control of the action and the response is well-thought of Ex. Answering questions of panelist during thesis defense, etc.
