2012-2013 Honors Math Analysis Instructor: Ms. Lisa Morales Email: lmorales@bishopamat.org Class Website: https://sites.google.com/a/bishopamat.org/lmorales/ Extension: 5854 Available for help: Tues/Wed 2:45pm-3:30pm Required Textbook: A Graphical Approach to Precalculus with Limits: A Unit Circle Approach Fifth Edition by Hornsby, Lial, Rockwold Required Materials: The following materials should be brought to class daily including the textbook: π 1.5 inch three ring binder π Five binder dividers with tabs (Notes/Homework/Quizzes/Tests/Other) π College Ruled loose leaf paper π Plenty of pencils and erasers, red pens π TI-84 graphing calculator preferred (TI-83 acceptable) Course Description: This course is designed for students with a strong mathematical background to master the concepts of mathematical functions graphically, numerically and algebraically. In addition, we cover trigonometric functions and their applications, matrices, conic sections, topics in discrete mathematics and an introduction to limits. Expectations: All students are expected to… π Spend a minimum of 1 hour of study time at home for every 80 minute block. π Check the website daily for vital class information and to reference the calendar. π Keep up with the material and seek tutoring immediately when a concept is not understood. Grading: 20% Homework/Classwork 30% Quizzes/Project 35% Tests (5 tests at 7% each) 15% Midterm & Final exam (7.5% each) Homework: Ideally homework should be done the night it is assigned regardless of due date. Homework is best used as a learning tool when done shortly after lesson has been taught. All homework should be LEGIBLE and done in pencil. Homework must have the problem written out (even if it is a word problem) and should be done step-by-step vertically with all work shown. Do not use multiple columns. A list of answers only will receive no credit. If you press hard or write thick, do NOT use the back side of the paper. Homework is due at the start of class, no exceptions including leaving it in your locker. Quizzes: You will be quizzed frequently. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. In most cases, quizzes will be closed book and closed notes. No formula sheets will be allowed. All problems must have all work shown. Any problem not accompanied by work will not receive credit. Quizzes will reflect class work and homework problems as well as assess your understanding of the concepts. At the end of each semester, I will drop the two lowest quiz scores. In the event that a student was absent on the day of a quiz, there will be no make up as that will count as a dropped quiz score. If the student is absent for more than two quizzes, those quizzes will not count against the student as stated in the Lancer Life. Tests: All tests will be announced a minimum of one week in advance. Tests will be closed book and closed notes. No formula sheets will be allowed. All problems must have all work shown. Any problem not accompanied by work will not receive credit. If the student is absent on the day of a test, they will take the test in class during the next class period they are in attendance. The student is still responsible for all material and assignments missed while taking the make up test. Absences: Students are expected to be in class. In the event of an absence, the student is responsible for obtaining lecture notes missed and turning in all assignments associated with the day of absence upon immediate return to school. Absent work should be turned in at the beginning of class upon return to school by placing it on the podium with a blue slip attached to it. Tutoring: Students are encouraged to come for tutoring as often as needed to attain a better understanding of the subject. I do ask that students come prepared with their materials and show that effort has been made on their part to attempt problems on their own. In addition, students should be diligent in asking for help early and not right before a major quiz or test. Tutoring hours will be updated weekly the class website, usually on Sunday evening. Panic Work: Some of you refer to this as “Late work.” No panic work of any kind will be accepted throughout the semester. Two assignments will be dropped at the end of the semester. Important Final Reminders 1. Respect everyone. Do not speak while I am speaking or when your classmates are participating. 2. Come prepared to class. You will be marked tardy if you are not in your seat when the bell rings. 3. Breaks and lunch are for food, drink, and visits to the restrooms and lockers. 4. Copying is cheating. This includes being the one providing the answers. 5. All rules in the Lancer Life must be followed.
