Why video?

“The good news for newspapers is that “news” is the most popular video category.” (Pew Research) 57 percent of online video users (67 percent of 18-29 year olds) send video links to others and 75 percent receive video links.

“Average time spent per visit to YouTube was about 17 minutes, compared to less than 8 minutes for USAToday.com and just about 6 minutes for latimes.com” – Compete.com

Capturing Video:

Source quality & frame motion http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/learning_guide/video/part03.html

Source Quality:

Use a tripod to reduce camera movementUse good lighting techniquesUse the best camera possibleDo the best you can with what you have to work withWhenever possible, always encode a file from its

uncompressed form

Don’t forget the audio! – Use additional & external

microphones

Frame motion:

“The percentage of the pixels that change from one frame to another” Things that affect frame motion: • People and objects movingCamera effectsPostproduction effectsExcessive zooming and rollingUnstable (shaky) videoAuto-focus and auto-exposure features

Converting Video: Also from http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/learning_guide/video/part03.html

“An art, not a science” – Lisa Larson One supported format: FLV (Flash Video) Software: – Adobe Flash Professional – Riva FLV Video Encoder – www.rivavx.com

– Format Factory - www.formatoz.com

– ffmpegX - www.ffmpegx.com/

Key Terms: • Viewing Size/Movie Size – Typically, the smaller the better – 320 x 240 recommended • Frame Rate (FPS frames per second) – The greater the FPS, the better the quality & more bandwidth consumed – 30 fps is unnecessary – 24 fps is a good starting point

Key Terms:

• Bit Rate – – “The amount of data transferred per second” – Like Frame Rate, the greater the bit rate, the better the quality and the more bandwidth consumed • Audio – Almost always choose mono – stereo is unnecessary and increases file size & bandwidth

Posting Video: BlOX CMS & Newsys

Other Considerations:

• Bandwidth – Bandwidth = $$$ – 1:1 relation between FLV filesize & bandwidth required to view full video • Raw file size x hits = total bandwidth • Advertising • VMIX • YouTube

Other Considerations:

• Advertising – “While still a small percentage of total and local online advertising, online video represents an enormous opportunity for newspapers to grow revenue and audience.” - NAA – “Online video advertising will grow from less than 5 percent of local online revenue in 2007 to 28 percent in 2012.” – Borrell & Associates

Other Considerations:

• Advertising – Formats: • Pre-roll, Overlay, Banner ads, sponsorships

Other Considerations:

• VMIX – Stylized widgets – Doesn’t charge for bandwidth, but by the number of views – Easy way to implement user-contributed video

Other Considerations:

• YouTube – Essentially free – Integrated with BLOX – Allows for user-contributed video – Revenue sharing possibilities with partnership program – • www.youtube.com/partners
