Course Description:
This course covers products and factoring of polynomials, algebraic fractions, exponents and radicals,
quadratic equations, functions and graphs, applications and systems of equations. A complete list of
TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) can be found on the TEA web site www.tea.state.tx.us.
Prerequisites:
Most students will have taken and passed Algebra 1 and Geometry. Some students may have also
completed MMA (Mathematical Modeling with Application). Students in this course have also taken and
in most cases passed the Algebra 1 EOC (End of Course) exam.
Textbook and Supplies:




Textbook: Algebra 2 textbooks can be checked out from the library and used as a resource
Think Through Math: Access usernames and passwords will be provided to all students, students
can log into the program at www.thinkthroughmath.com
Calculator: TI-83, TI-83 plus, and TI-84 plus are supplied for use in the classroom. Students can
also check out a calculator from the campus library if one is available.
Compassion books: Students are required to purchase and bring the class one compassion book.
Tutoring:
Math tutoring is provided in room 215 every morning from 7:00 am till 7:40 and every afternoon from 3:15
to 3:45. Exceptions are as follows:






AM duty in the cafeteria (once every third week)
PM bus duty ( every Monday afternoon)
Attend a faulty meetings ( every 1st and 3rd Wednesday afternoons of the month)
Attend department meetings
A substitute teacher was present during the school day
Rarely…. attend to personal issues (ie: meet repairman or doctors’ appointments)
A notice will be posted on the door
Test corrections/re-takes:










Test corrections will not be allowed for the purpose of improving an individual test grade.
Test are announced in advance
Students are required to take test on the day of the test if present at school.
Students absent the day of a test will need to test the day they return to school.
Students are offered the opportunity to “re-take” a test.
Re-takes may be before and/or after school and/or in the Content Mastery Center.
Students may request re-takes for tests where he or she scores below 70.
Students are required to participate in at least one ½ hour tutorial before being permitted to take
the test again.
Re-takes must be done within one week of receiving the original test grade.
The grade issued for a test where a student has re-taken the test may be a combination of the
original test grade and the re-take score.
Projects/Notebooks/Computer Labs:





All Projects/ Notebooks and Computer labs are considered major grades
All Projects/Notebooks and Computer labs assignments will have a rubric to help students
understand how they are being graded and what is required
All Projects/Notebooks and Computer labs are due the Wednesday before the end of the six
week grading period. Students who are absent on the due date should turn the work in the next
day they attend school.
If a student is absent for an extended period of time the student will receive an incomplete for that
grading periods report card.
Students with incompletes must complete the missing work within two weeks of the end of the
grading period.
Homework/Class Assignments:







Homework/Class Assignments are daily grades
Class Assignments taken for a grade are due at the end of the class period, but can be taken
home if need. Student should always return this work the following school day.
Homework is due the following school day unless otherwise stated on the homework paper.
Late Homework/Class Assignments may be submitted until graded work has been returned.
Students who have been absent and need to make up returned graded assignments may do so
only in tutorials.
Homework/Class Assignments older than two weeks will not be accepted
Students may turn in a “Pink Slip” in place of a daily grade
Pink Slips




Pink Slips are for students who have not completed a Homework/Class Assignment
Pink Slips offer a chance for students to take responsibility and explain why an assignment is not
complete/missing.
By submitting a pink slip the student will receive a grade of 50 in place of the missing/zero.
Pink Slips must be completely filled out and signed by the student.
Academic Dishonesty:
Cheating or copying of work is a Level 2 offense and may include any of the following:





Coping for another students test paper, homework paper, and or computer files
Using during a test materials not authorized by the teacher giving the test
Collaborating, without authorization, with another student during an examination or in
preparing homework work.
Knowingly, and without authorization, using, buying, selling, stealing, copying, or possessing
in whole or in part the content of a test, homework, or class assignment.
Substituting another students work (with or without permission) as your own work
A student who copies another student’s work and submits it as his own is cheating. Both the
student who copied as well as the student who allowed his paper (or work) to be copied will be
referred to the office



First Offense – 2 day of ISS
Second Offense - 3 days of ISS
Third Offense – Proceed to Level III (in most cases DAEP)
Classroom Rules of Conduct:
Students will refrain for behavior in the classroom that intentionally or unintentionally disrupts the learning
process and thus impedes the learning of others. Students should follow all classroom procedures and
student code of conduct from the Coldsprings-Oakhurst Consolidated ISD student handbook. A copy of
the handbook can be located on the school web site http://www.cocisd.org
