Progressivism

• In the progressive movement of the 1900’s
reformers pushed for a number of changes.
• They had four (4) specific goals.

• Cleaning up local government
– Reform corrupt city governments
• Fair tax systems
• Lower public transportation fees
• Reform at the state level
– Passed laws to regulate railroads, mines,
telephones, and large business.
– Robert La Follette, Gov. Wisconsin, led way of
regulating big business.
Progressivism (con’t)
• Federal law did not ban child labor, state laws were
changed to ban child labor
– Set maximum hours for workers
• Muller v. Oregon – the Supreme Court decide that the state could
legally limit working hours of women
• 1917 – Men had 10-hour work day
• INITIATIVE – gives voters the right to propose a law.
• REFERENDUM – voters could reject or accept
initiative.
• RECALL - people can force a government official the
right to face another election.
