Hi, everyone! Hope you enjoyed the long weekend. As you
know, eBay was founded on this date in 1995; I hold them
personally responsible for my mom selling my old Barbie
bag. Here are this week’s announcements; note that “Beauty
and the Beast” runs this week! Also, note that, starting with
this edition, publications of the MacKnightly News will be
posted on the McCallum High School web site for your
future reference.

Back-to-School Night September 12th:
Mark your calendars for the evening of Wednesday,
September 12th, for Back-to-School Night. The fun will start
at 5:00 in the cafeteria with information tables from Mac’s
booster clubs and organizations, along with Marco’s pizza
and drinks for sale by the PTSA so you won’t go hungry.
The PTSA General Meeting will be in the gym at 6:00,
followed by the opportunity, starting at 6:30, to meet your
students’ teachers. Be there! (If your organization would like
to reserve a display table, contact me at mary@kahle.org.)
Saturday School News:
The official start of Saturday school is September 22nd.
Fine Arts Academy Presents “Beauty and the Beast”
This Week!
September 6th - 9th at McCallum High School The Fine Arts
Theatre:
Step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern
classic, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”. Become transported
to the heart of provincial life in a lovely French town. When
Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he
seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a
horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice’s daughter,
Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life.
Belle’s taming of the unfortunate Beast and his
ultimate transformation back into a handsome prince
enthralled Broadway audiences for over 13 years. This “tale as
old as time” is filled with spectacular costumes and sets and
brings the entire community together for family theatre at its
best!

Join the PTSA:
Have you often wondered how you can contribute to your
school community and have a voice in your child’s education,
all while getting cool discounts on things and rubbing your
stomach at the same time? It’s easy: Join the McCallum
PTSA. Your support will fund: staff appreciation events,
extra supplies, activities, and field trips for teachers and
students, student scholarships, and much, much more! See
the attached flier and form to become a part of this important
organization. It’s college resume material if your student
joins along with you!
Become a Partner in Education:
If your business would like to donate goods and services or
provide financial support to the PTSA in exchange for lots of
great PR, become a McCallum High School Partner in
Education! Your support will make an amazing difference
for our students! Contact Barbara Burnett at
burnett5810@austin.rr.com if interested.
Be a Secret Pal!
The Secret Pals program at McCallum is a great way to show
our staff that they are appreciated and loved. All you need to
do is commit to treating one, two, or three staff members
each month with small ($5ish) gift or treats. You can have
your student drop them off (the gifts, not the staff members)
in the office to the front desk ladies, who will get them to the
right staff members in between dispensing wisdom to parents
and students alike. I send out reminder notices each month
along with suggestions of what to give. There are still 75 staff
members to be adopted, including the 13 cafeteria staff.
Someone has donated money to be used toward the cafeteria
staff, and they only need to get two treats each semester.
Please look over the attached updated staff list of those
remaining to be adopted. Also attached are instructions on
how to be a Secret Pal. Please let me know how many you
are willing to adopt and name a couple of others in case
someone else has requested those staff members in the
meantime. E-mail Julie Peckham at
j.peckham@hotmail.com. It is helpful to know what
activities your student is involved in as well. Mac parents are
the best!
Homecoming Dance is Coming Home!
Can you do the Wobble? If not, it’s time to learn! Mark your
calendars for Saturday, September 22nd, for Homecoming!
With a live DJ and lots of great dance music, it’s bound to be
awesome! Plan on it, be there, tell your friends, make your
plans, practice your moves, and get your groove on!
Parents, if you would like to volunteer to be a chaperone or
sell tickets beforehand, contact Melinda Taylor
atMTaylor@law.utexas.edu. Volunteers are guaranteed fun
too!

Free Practice SAT/ACT:
The next Free Practice ACT/SAT's will be given Sept 15th
and Nov 17th at the College Nannies + Tutors Learning
Center (3908 Far West), not too far from a good yogurt
place. The test will start at 9 am and conclude at 1 pm, and
it mimics the setting and timing of the actual tests and an
afternoon of viewing “Godzilla vs. Mothra”. Students will
grade their own test immediately upon completion and will
leave with their results. The more familiar students are with
the test, the better they will perform on the "real
thing!" Call 372-8385 to reserve your spot.
Youth Basketball at NWAYBA:
Northwest Austin Youth Basketball (NWAYBA) will open
registration on September 1st at www.nwayba.org. The
league offers competitive recreational play for everyone
from 1st grade through high school, with the occasional
PhD student thrown in. NWAYBA offers an excellent coed developmental league for 1st and 2nd grade kids. There
are separate boys and girls divisions from 3rd through 6th
grade. Tryouts start the weekend of October 20th (every kid
makes a team!). If your child loves the game or just wants
to learn, please participate in Northwest Austin's best youth
basketball league. For more information, you can contact us
at president@nwayba.org.
Enjoy the week, everyone!
