Promethean Interactive White Board Training
I. PARTS of the Promethean Board (Use flip chart to show)
a. The Projector
i. You should not press buttons on this
ii. Must remember to turn off NIGHTLY (can take several days for new bulbs)
b. The Board
i. Location of Flame (power/ connectivity)
ii. Location of Sound Controls
iii. NO chalk & NO Dry Erase Markers! NO MARKERS - NONE AT ALL!!! EVER!!!
c. The Flame
i. Red = Bad – there is connection issue
ii. White = Good
iii. No Light – not plugged in/ no power
d. Sound Controls – sound from laptop connects via usb. (VHS players connect through the AV
Yellow, Red, White cables.) The cable on teacher plate is for iPods, etc. only. Keep with remotes.
If left plugged in it may cause interference/crackling.
i. Speakers located on board
ii. Red on left side of board = Off
iii. Green on left side of board = On
iv. Suggest that you put all items on max volume, computer, etc. and use master volume
switch on the board
v. NO Sound??? Check to see if standby button is green, check adaptor on back of board to
see if plugged in. No TV Sound??? Use source button on tuner remote.
e. The Pens – You get 2, there is a specific place for them located on the left side of the board.
i. Teacher (dark) and Student Pen (light)
ii. Don’t Drop or will break
iii. KEEP Pens ON BOARD!!!
f. Questions???
II. The Teacher Plate – ALWAYS leave teacher plate plugs plugged into the plate. If you need to
unplug something, unplug cables from external media, not plate.
a. Computer Hookup – VGA (blue brick) plug into plate and laptop
b. Computer Audio – goes through usb cable.
i. plug usb cable into laptop and into plate – EGG closest to NEST
c. VHS (Yellow/White/Red) – to plug in your VHS player
e. USB Port - ***one is designated FOR the promethean board on the plate.
i. The Egg on the Cable closes to Panel – EGG closest to NEST
ii. Can’t use regular USB Cable – MUST use one w/ egg.
f. Data Port – CAT5 cable for network connection
g. Questions???
III. The Remote Controls
a. Promethean Projector Remote
i. Power Button
1. One Push On
2. Two Push Off
ii. Computer 1 – Computer Output
iii. Computer 2 – Television Control (then you need tuner remote)
iv. Video – allows you to use your VHS player.
v. Freeze – freezes whatever is on the screen in case you want to do something else like
attendance or email while your kids are working. (ex: while your kids are doing a warmup)
vi. No Show – Blacks the screen bur leaves the bulb ON!!! (Only for brief periods)
b. TV Tuner Remote
i. Power Button – press firmly and look for green light
ii. Channel Up/Channel Down
iii. If having problems, press the source button. This usually fixes it.
c. Questions???
IV. The Document Camera (This could be different depending on the camera)
a. Hook up – VGA (blue square end) IN =from computer to camera, VGA out = from the camera to
plate
b. Power On (that turns board to the camera view / off ActivInspire)
c. Source button on doc camera will allow you to toggle between the computer and camera.
V. Connecting the Laptop
a. 1st VGA cable = Plug VGA cable into Laptop, plug other end into VGA IN on your doc camera.
2nd VGA cable = Plug VGA cable into VGA OUT on doc camera, plug other end of VGA cable into
teacher plate.
b. Plug USB cable in Laptop
c. Plug other end of USB cable w/ egg into teacher plate
c. Boot Laptop, then power on projector
d. If cables already connected (Win + P) to bring up monitor menu. = SELECT DUPLICATE to show
view on laptop and board.
e. Questions???
VI. Calibrating the Board
a. Hold Pen tip over The Flame (turns blue) = board will ask you to calibrate
b. Should be done at beginning of day or any time you remove and hook up your computer
c. Pen is active mouse while you are not in ActivInspire
VII. Opening ActivInspire
a. Found in Main Menu
b. Suggest Pin to Taskbar (don’t just click and drag to desktop)
c. Questions??? * Ctrl – S , to save DOES NOT work in ActivInspire.
VIII. Getting Started
a. Plug Promethean board into the NEW outlet directly beneath your Promethean board.
b. Plug up teacher laptop, document camera, and teacher plate.
c. USE the Cat5 plug on your laptop. Plug it into the laptop and the teacher plate. If you show
videos, stream, etc. they will work much better this way.
d. Power on laptop FIRST, then projector
e. Make sure the light on the projector is green. Orange or red indicates no power or a problem.
If your projector light does not turn green, pull power cord out of the back of the projector,
wait 2 full min and plug in. Look for green light.
f. Check green light on left side of board for sound connectivity
g. Is your picture missing??? (Win + P = duplicate)
h. Open ActivInspire – pin and unpin the toolbar in AvtivInspire. Select your pen color, select
pen, and select blue box with black scribble on it (annotate desktop shortcut), then minimize.
i.
Open your word or ppt document and annotate with pen, the ActivInspire toolbar should remain
up. Annotate on top of something. If you have multiple pages in word, then you must erase the
ink layer before you go to the next page. Ink MOVES in multiple page word docs. It does not in
ppt.
j. Open a timer in ActivInspire = In the resource browser window on left, click on the resource
browser button (looks like a movie take board). It will open a window beneath. Click on the + by
Lesson Building Tools  select Gadgets  select a timer.
k. Turn on tuner with tuner remote, green light should show. Press computer 2 on promethean
remote to toggle to TV, select channel 41 on TV. Toggle back to Promethean board.
l. Turn on doc camera – this will automatically turn on your board to the camera. Place a
overhead or worksheet under and write on it. There is a slight delay in the projection. Press
source button on CAMERA to toggle back to the board. The camera HAS to be plugged in.
m. The promethean flipchart is located in L - - Promethean Training
n. Questions???
IV. Your Assignment
a. Go to your room or your buddy’s room. You will need to complete the following in both rooms.
b. Install ActivInspire on your laptop. Log on as: MSLInstal , PW: Salem2011 . Go to Start 
Computer  L  Promethean  ActivInspire. License number is in the word doc. You will need
it. To install, right click on ActivInspireSuite_v… and select install as an administrator. Agree
to the defaults.
c. Complete “Can I do the following?” section on back of this sheet.
d. If you have immediate assistance, teacher trainers will be close by to assist.
e. If during the year you have any questions, please write them down and email

Can I do the following???
___ I installed ActivInspire on my laptop. Shut laptop off.
