Study Abroad Program Proposal Guidelines The Advisory Global Engagement Board, a group of faculty appointed by the Deans of the colleges and schools, governs all the academic programs abroad, as well as other university international programs, offered by the Office of Global Engagement. Program proposals are submitted to the Advisory Global Engagement Board. A proposal from a faculty member or group of faculty proposing any new study abroad or exchange program MUST INCLUDE ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. What is the purpose of the proposed program? 2. How does it contribute to the mission of the institution and/or the particular unit within the institution, which is the focus of the programs interest (e.g. fine arts, economics, or civil engineering)? 3. Whom is it designed to serve (e.g. specific majors, students of a particular language from any major, etc.)? How many? Is there demonstrable interest among the? 4. What is the design of the program? a. When is the program offered? b. What is the program’s length? c. Is the program led by a faculty member? d. What courses are to be offered? e. Have these been approved by the appropriate curriculum committee of the faculty member’s college or school? f. Do the courses meet requirements for contact hours? g. How are the courses enhanced by their setting abroad? h. What language or other course prerequisites, if any, are required? i. What infrastructure requirements are necessary for success, and how and by whom are these arranged- housing, class space, local field trips, etc.? j. What expertise and experience does the faculty member have to lead the program? 5. What are the safety and security risks at the proposed program site, and how will these be dealt with? 6. Is there broad faculty support for such a program (this is critical for making a program economically viable, since the most important reason students cite in their decision to go abroad is faculty encouragement.)? 7. How would the program differ from current study abroad offerings, or would it replace a current offering? If the latter, what compelling arguments are there for such a replacement? (Better academic offerings, cheaper, more attractive place, etc.?) Program proposals will be reviewed by considering not only all of the above, but also the financial risk involved and the staff support available from the Office of Global Engagement, and how the proposed program compliments existing offerings and contributes to our long-term strategic goals. Not mentioned above, but critical to the success of the program, is the cost of the program, and how affordable it might be in comparison with other programs in the same country. The Office of Global Engagement develops all program budgets. Please attach the program budget with the financial information you provide.
