Westbury High School Science Department Lesson Plan Teacher: M. Callegari Date: Oct 20th- Oct. 24th 2014 Subject:Anatomy & Physiology Lesson: Integumentary System LESSON OBJECTIVE: What will your students be able to do by the end of the class? The student will discover how our bodies are put together through the framework of tissues, skin, hair and nails. Defining Success STANDARDS ADDRESSED: TEKS AND SE SE – Objective 2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the organization of living systems 6(A) The student examines the body processes that maintain homeostasis. The student is expected to investigate and describe the integration of the chemical and physical processes, including equilibrium, temperature, pH balance, chemical reactions, passive transport, active transport, and biofeedback, that contribute to homeostatis; and 6(B) determine the consequences of the failure to maintain homeostasis. 10(A) The student investigates structure and function of the human body. The student is expected to analyze the relationships between the anatomical structures and the physiological functions of body systems. 5(D) analyze and describe the effects of pressure, movement, torque, tension, and elasticity on the human Teaching Strategies / Mini Lessons Content: -Develop a strong language of the discipline (the integumentary system). -Observe patterns on the cellular level of skin. -Discover the changes in skin over time due to environmental factors, heredity, and lifestyle. Process: -Mnenomics for layers of skin. -Project-based learning: Building the layers of the skin with colored clay Product: -Skin models -Ability to accurately discuss the details of the chapter using the proper vernacular Lesson Cycle ANTICIPATORY SET: (ENGAGE): A “hook” to get the students interest and attention. (A question, picture, 2-3 minute long video clip, a demonstration). MATERIALS - Video on Integumentary System Interactive Science Notebook TEACHING/INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS: (EXPLORE/EXPLAIN): Provide students with a common experience (Labs, hands on activities). Debrief activity, teach concept. Human Body Mannequin -PPT and Notes from Ch. 4 Dry Erase Boards Clay GUIDED PRACTICE AND MONITORING: (EXPLAIN). Interactive discussions between teacher and students. Guide/help students as they solve problems and/or answer questions. Clarify misconceptions and check for understanding. -Review location and function of various skin receptors INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: (ELABORATE) Students apply the information learned in the Explain to answer questions or solve problems. -Students will complete models of the skin using clay -Tissues review worksheet -Test Review EVALUATE: Assess student mastery. (Quizzes, Lab Reports, Unit tests) -Quiz on Skin Diagram -Exam #3 on Chapters 1,3, and 4 SpEd/ ELL Modifications Extended Time Guided Practice Shortened Assignments Peer Tutoring Short and Repeated Instructions Visuals Preferential seating
