REQUIRED TEXTS: The Foundations of the United States Air Force
COURSE DESCRIPTION: AS 100 is a survey course designed to introduce cadets to the United
States Air Force and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. Featured topics include:
organization and heritage of the Air Force, introduction to war, officer career fields, Air Force
installations and benefits of Air Force life. Leadership Laboratory is mandatory for AFROTC
"pursuing" cadets and complements this course by providing cadets with followership experiences.
COURSE GOALS: The AS 100 cadet should know what AFROTC programs are available, the role of
aerospace power in war, the heritage and organizational structure of the Air Force, and career
fields and benefits available to an Air Force officer.
ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR CLASSES: Please refer to regulations in the Student Catalog regarding
class attendance. Punctuality, regular attendance and attentiveness are important and contribute
to your grade in the course. There will be frequent hands-on activity and you must participate in
order to benefit. According to college regulations, absence in excess of 20% of the regularly
scheduled class periods, regardless of cause, may result in a failing grade in the course.
Furlough does not begin until the last scheduled class for the student regardless if instructor
cancels class (AS Classes will not be canceled).
1) Spring Furlough – 23 March 2011 – 1 April 2011
2) Summer Furlough – 5 May 2011 – 19 August 2011
ROTC TRAINING DAY REQUIREMENTS: Attendance for scholarship and pursuing cadets is
MANDATORY for all ROTC Training Day sessions. Freshmen considering an Air Force career are

highly encouraged to attend. Training will provide more detailed information about the Air Force
than is covered in the classroom.
CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Personal appearance will comply with Citadel standards. Classes will be
called to attention when the instructor enters/departs and anytime an officer of higher rank (than
the instructor) enters/departs the room. Only AS100 texts and necessary writing materials will be
on a student’s desk during class. Jackets will be hung outside the classroom. Eating and drinking is
allowed in the classroom as long as it is not disruptive and crumbs are cleaned up afterwards. If
clean-up is not done, then the privilege will be removed.
GRADE COMPOSITION:
1) TESTS: Three tests will be given during the semester. These tests are mandatory. Each test
accounts for 25% (100 points) of your final grade. Tests will not be cumulative and will
cover only material from the block. There is NO final exam.
2) CLASS PARTICIPATION: Class participation is worth 25% of your grade. You can not earn
the full 25% if you do not participate during the discussions or are absent from class.
Missing more than 20% of classes will result in an "F" grade for the course, regardless of
your test average.
3) EXTRA CREDIT: The instructor reserves the right to offer all students an extra credit
project worth up to 3-10% of the course. The project will be a 6-8 slide PowerPoint
presentation and a talking and background paper on any current world, national, or local
military event.
MAKE-UP TESTS AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Make-up tests and late assignments will only be
accepted if coordinated and approved by instructor. Coordination and approval must occur before
class starts. In the event of extenuating circumstances special consideration will be given by
instructor (see below for examples of extenuating and non-extenuating circumstances). In the
event students do not coordinate a make-up test or late turn in of assignment with instructor, a
penalty of 5 points per day will be given until test in completed or assignment is turned in. It is the
student’s responsibility to coordinate with the instructor for any make-up tests or late assignments.
1) Extenuating circumstances are death in the family or medical treatment.
2) Non-extenuating circumstances are sleeping through class, special leave, special orders,
and/or meeting with other professor/group/club.
