Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
School is beginning to take shape now. Mr. Tom Greer and
his team are finalizing the master schedule so that students
could receive updated schedules (to be mailed later this month).
All fall sport teams are in conditioning. Girls’ golf will begin practice on Friday, July 29th and the remaining fall sports will
begin practice on Monday, August 1st. We are still interviewing for two remaining faculty positions. Summer school has
ended, but Camp Cathedral continues, so we have many younger students still on our campus. Our hope, of course, is that
they will come to Cathedral in future years as students. As Principal, I can feel the change in the air as we approach
our August orientation days!
Please remember that every Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. either Father Munshower, our Senior Chaplain, or
Father Zahn, our Chaplain, will be offering Mass in our Chapel. During the school year, we will offer two masses
each day – one before school and one rotating one throughout the school day.
The next Parent Email will be on July 27. After that, they will begin coming each week during the school year.
The School Calendar is on pages 6 & 7 of this issue.

Wednesday during the summer at 8:30 a.m. Please do join us if you are able to do so.
Congratulations:
Savannah Madden (’13) has been a Life Guard for two years. Monday her training was put to the test as
she saved the life of an unconscious diver who suffered a head injury on her watch. She saved the life of
a man twice her age and surely twice her weight in the diving pool at the Riviera Club. Her manager commented
to me that they are proud to have her on their staff and confident in her ability to save lives.
Vincent Corsaro (’14) representing The Fighting Irish Wrestling Club was
crowned The Cadet 145 lbs State Wrestling Champ for the State of Indiana.
Also winning a State title in the Freestyle Junior division was Brian Harvey
(’12) at the 152 lbs weight class and Wesley Bernard (’14) who was crowned
The Cadet Heavyweight Indiana State Wrestling Champ in both Freestyle &
the Greco-Roman divisions. Bernard went on to represent Team Indiana at the Cadet National Duals in Daytona Beach
Florida, attaining ALL Tournament & ALL American status going undefeated with an 7-0 record in the Freestyle
Tournament! All three of these young men will be representing Team Indiana in the Asics Fargo Nationals in Fargo North
Dakota in mid-July! Good Luck to them all….Go IRISH
Pitchers take honors in City, County - Jun 30, 2011
The Cathedral and Lawrence Central high school baseball teams dominate the City and Marion County honor
teams this season.
Cathedral reached the Class 4A state championship
game for the second consecutive season -- losing to Fort
Wayne Carroll 5-3 -- and pitcher Dillon Peters is bringing
home the City Player of the Year award for the third time.
Peters, who has committed to the University of Texas and was drafted by the Cleveland Indians, was 10-2 with a 1.41 ERA
and struck out 155 in 792/3 innings while also hitting in the middle of the order.
He is joined by teammates Austin Boos, Mike Kseniak, Nick McCarty and Phil Mosey.... The winners are
selected in a vote of area coaches with input from The Indianapolis Star's high school sports’ staff.

This summer Katherine Clifford (‘13), Alex Rohe (’13), and Anwar Eaton (’11) have had the pleasure to be a part of
the Symphonic Youth Orchestra of Greater Indianapolis. Their previous teacher, Mrs. Shawn Goodman, and current
teacher, Mr. Steve Goodman, donate their time and effort into this program in order to
unite players in high school (with a few exceptions) from all over the Greater
Indianapolis area. They play exceptional music with practice twice a week for two
hours and sectionals outside of the practice room. With the hard music they play and
the help they receive, the students in this summer orchestra have chances to grow in
skill.
 They would like to invite you to come experience our growth and to see what they have learned and plan to
bring back to Cathedral to make this upcoming year more brilliant than the last. Their last and best concert is at
Cathedral on July 16th at 7:00 p.m. The orchestra will be at Cathedral practicing all day as a whole group, small
groups and with professionals that have been hired in to help the orchestra. This is our best concert but there is another
one on the ninth at the Arts Garden downtown in Circle Center at one in the afternoon.
Liz Subrin (’12) and Katy Hoeper (’13), CHS Ambassadors for the Indianapolis Archdiocesan REFUGEE
RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM (under the direction of Gabrielle Campo, CHS alum ‘99), were
honored at the recent “World Refugee Day Banquet” for their service this past school year. They
have both worked throughout the year (with other Catholic High School Ambassadors) to raise
awareness of the plight and dangers for refugees. From the generosity of all the CHS students,
faculty and staff, they were able to collect and then donate to the Refugee Resettlement Program
10,000 toiletry items (out of the total 20,000 donated by all the local Catholic High Schools combined). These resources will
be used for incoming refugees as they start their new lives in America.
Congratulations to Sister Jenny Howard, a former science teacher at Cathedral High School, who
has been elected to her community leadership for the 2nd time. She is now the 2nd counselor to the
General Superior of the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Congratulations, Sister Jenny!
Congratulations to CHS’s Jack Doyle (’08), who was one of 34 players named to the
preseason watch list for the 2011 John Mackey Award, presented to the nation’s top tight ends. Doyle
made 20 catches for 224 years and two touchdowns at Western Kentucky last season. Good luck, Jack!

Coach Ed Roessler retires after more than a decade with the Irish
Indianapolis, Ind. — Jim McLinn, Cathedral High School athletic director, announced today that Coach Ed Roessler is
retiring after 11 years as head coach of the Lady Irish softball team.
“Coach Roessler has been a dedicated coach and more importantly a great person. We are extremely grateful for his
years of service to the softball program,” McLinn said. “He has served Cathedral well.”
In his years as head coach, Roessler led the Irish to two state finals games — in 2001 and 2003 — and the team was City
Champ those same years. He and the Irish also claimed Sectional titles in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2010 and most recently
this year.
“It’s been an honor to be associated with this team and this school,” Roessler said. “Unless you’ve been part
of it, you just can’t appreciate how special this school is. I’m fortunate to have enjoyed many wonderful
years, and thankful that I’ll continue to have the chance to work with kids at Cathedral in a different
capacity.”
“Ed has a deep passion for Cathedral her students, faculty and staff. He often times refers to Cathedral as ‘this very
special place up on the hill,’ ” McLinn said. “He plans to remain active with the Irish Athletic Department, by serving
5
as equipment manager for the football program and volunteering with other needs as they arise. We’re thankful we get
to keep him around, and wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.”
McLinn said a full search committee will be organized in early August to begin the process to find a new head coach
for the Lady Irish.

CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING POLICY SCHOOL YEAR 2011-2012
Students are required to read two (2) books; however, at least one specific book is required for each grade level. Students
may choose the second book from the list provided. The required book will facilitate additional discussion and study in each
class during the school year to complement the existing literature curriculum on each level. The summer reading tests for
both books will be given on Thursday, August 18, 2011, in all English classes. These tests will count for 10% of the
7
student’s first quarter English grade. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HIGHLIGHT AND TO TAKE CHAPTER NOTES
WHILE READING THE SELECTIONS IN ORDER TO FACILITATE REVIEW BEFORE TAKING THE TESTS IN THE FALL.
Please be advised that books should be ordered/purchased early from retail stores to ensure adequate reading time. We
also strongly encourage students to purchase copies of required reading books and to be prepared to bring these to class.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“You have not chosen me; I have chosen you. Go and bear fruit that will last.” Jn 13:16. Our actions in serving others attest
to the fruit that we bear and offer to others. Earlier this summer, the Indianapolis Star had the headline: “A Heart for the
Poor” as it praised a generous gift by a successful developer with simple roots who donated $40 million to Wishard. (June
12, 2011). Cathedral students show our heart for the poor with compelling service actions that also allow us to ripen as rich
sources of fruit and love for our community and God. Our actions help to introduce change, hope, and support; they
galvanize our understanding of the advocacy needed to address the causes of poverty. They open our hearts to God.
Class Service Projects Class service projects will take place in July and August. They become perfect service
opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in
Service Opportunities. By supporting these projects on Wednesday, July 13 or Aug 10 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM,
and on Saturday, Aug 13 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30), we show a unified force of Irish love in the
community. Research has shown that family service projects are bonding core actions that reinforce good decision
reasoning for teenage students and help a family to “walk the talk.” Innumerable opportunities are listed below that can be
developed as a family service projects.
Habitat for Humanity Could there be a more vital way for us to support community needs in Indianapolis than to support
low cost housing? Cathedral will help to construct our ninth Habitat for Humanity home this fall. Our Habitat for Humanity
chapter, led by seniors Natalie Dickman, Grace Waltz and Claire Welch, will host Shack City on September 9 th as an
insightful and dynamic fundraising experience in homelessness and need for low cost housing. This project helps us to raise
$5,000 which our chapter commits to the fall Habitat home that Cathedral undertakes as an important community outreach
each year. Thanks for your support of Habitat!
Senior Service Our Cathedral 2011 seniors have contributed more than 37,000 service hours to the Indianapolis
community and more through their acts of giving and support during their last four years. This equals more than eighteen
persons in payroll that has been donated through their volunteer work and support. Their insights gained have been
immeasurable as they conclude their four years at Cathedral and prepare to go forth to acquire their next four years of
10
learning and contribution. Congratulations, seniors, on your good works and heart.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hour detail and summary by year. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are due
December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12, freshmen,
sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be shown on
their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned after April 1
may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. After
Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.

have other problems with the linked documents, please proceed to the website to access links from the Service
Opportunities area
under On Campus/Service Outreach.
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.
Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
16
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Meditation: Exodus 3:1-6,9-12
“Moses! Moses!” (Exodus 3:4)
A burning bush brought Moses face-to-face with the Lord—and with a divine mission for his life: “I will send you to
Pharaoh to lead my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10). To Moses, it must have felt like he was being
asked to do the impossible. Convincing Pharaoh to let his people go would be enough of a challenge. It only made matters
worse that Moses was a wanted man. Going back to Egypt might mean being arrested and tried for murder. Surely God had
the wrong man!
So Moses tried to maneuver his way out of the assignment. He questioned whether he was fit for the job. He questioned
whether the people would listen to him. He questioned whether Pharaoh would take him seriously. “What if, what if, what if?”
Finally, Moses stopped beating around the bush: Please send someone else!
18
But God didn’t give up. He answered every objection with the same words of assurance: “I will be with you.” Finally, Moses
agreed and we all know the rest of the story.
You may not see a burning bush today, but God is still calling you. He has a plan for you that involves serving him in your
home, your church, or your community. And if you’re like most of us, you are probably pretty good at finding reasons why
you’re the wrong person for the job. But God knows who you are— even better than you do! He knows your strengths and
weaknesses, your fears and limitations. And still he calls you to be his ambassador.
Every day, we face a choice. We can choose to put off God’s call and plan or we can embrace it. And if we are struggling
with his call, we can take Moses as our model. We can voice all of our objections to the Lord, and let him answer them one
by one. At least then we will have gotten them out of the way so that we can get to work building his kingdom. Remember:
God never sends you into a situation alone. If he could protect Moses, he can certainly protect you!
“Lord, I will go wherever you lead—so long as you are with me. Open my heart to sense your calling and presence today.”
Blessings,
Principal
