MACTC Health Science Academy
The demand for qualified health care professionals is significantly growing every year, and predictions indicate the need to fill medical vacancies will significantly increase over the next twenty years. In an effort to meet the need for trained health care workers, the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center began the Health Science Academy; an advanced healthcare program for second year MACTC Allied Health
Technology students designed to provide Direct Credit options, clinical internships, as well as advanced certifications to better prepare students pursuing healthcare related careers after graduation.
Vision
The MACTC Health Science Academy is an academic and clinical-based model that contributes to meeting the healthcare needs of the West Michigan community by preparing students for careers in healthcare.
Mission
The mission of the MACTC Health Science Academy is to prepare high school students to successfully enter post-secondary Health Science education and the healthcare workforce.
Program Application Requirements
Seniors Only (Students must have taken Allied Health Technology with B- or better)
80% attendance at CTC
2.5/4.0 GPA/Homeschool
Possess reliable transportation for clinical internships
Eligible for MCC Dual Enrollment through MACTC
Attend Spring Health Science Academy Orientation
Academy Target Goals
MACTC students participating in the Health Science Academy will be able to:
1. Make health career decisions based on their individual career interests, needs, abilities, and career goals.
2. Develop professional or technical skill foundations that support a successful transition to postsecondary education and/or entry-level employment in a health career.
3. Develop a employability skills to be successful in a changing healthcare environment including: o Communications skills o Teamwork o Professional behavior & ethics o Problem solving skills o Technology
4. Establish an awareness of wellness and healthy life style behaviors.
Academy Educational Opportunities
Academic curriculum focused in health sciences with clinical applications, including Direct
Credit for post-secondary education
Select programs to create a smooth transition into health careers jobs and/or post-secondary education, such as pharmacy technician, certified nursing assisting, and personal trainer
Leadership and team building skills development
Fieldtrips, guest speakers, volunteer opportunities, and health careers fairs
Advisory Board mentors
Clinical internships and observations
Distance learning instruction and demonstrations with St. Louis University Medical School

Grading Policy
Grading is based on several academic and clinical categories. Category weight may change due to semester and HS Academy requirements. This includes the following areas:
Academics—Tests, Quizzes, Projects, Assignments
Clinical Lab—Skills training and check-offs
Internships
Employability Skills
Homework
Academy students should expect daily medical readings and assignments, formative assessments, clinical activities and applications. Independence in daily work and responsibilities is expected.
Additionally, students will also receive a daily PRIDE grade. This 5 point grade will be earned by
Promptness, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Environment. If a student is absent, no points will
be earned for that day. Partial points may be earned for excused absence or completion of make –up
work.
