Real and complex numbers are introduced so that all quadratic equations can be solved. Quadratic expressions, equations, and functions are developed. Circles return with their quadratic algebraic representations on the coordinate plane. The link between probability and data is explored through conditional probability. They apply methods from probability and statistics to draw inferences and conclusions from data. Students expand their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions. They expand their study of right triangle trigonometry to model periodic phenomena. And, finally, students bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems. Course Description • Students in this course will also be taught all units in Analytic Geometry and all units in Advanced Algebra . The fundamental purpose of Analytic Geometry is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades and throughout Coordinate Algebra in high school. • The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of similarity, congruence, and proofs. In addition students will understand the relationships with special right triangles and the use of trigonometric ratios to solve problems. • Students will interpret and analyze functions using different representations. Course Goal • The course goal is to prepare, take, and pass the Georgia Milestones with at least a 70 at the midterm of the academic year. • The Georgia Milestones is a statewide standardized, assessment comprised of multiple choice and free response questions geared towards material learned throughout since the beginning of the year. • You will be encouraged to prepare and do well on the Georgia Milestones all year round – the examination is 20% of course average. I will check it at least twice a week. Skills Checks Daily Checks Skills Checks are graded assignments given after each concept. These online assignments will be given online on www.tenmarks.com. Daily checks are in-class assignments given after each concept. These will usually be just like homework assignments and you may use your notes and homework for assistance. Quizzes Quizzes are in class assignments given after every 2 or 3 concepts. You may not use any notes, etc. for assistance. Tests Tests are given after every unit. Final Comprehensive Exam will be at the end of academic year covering all topics in course. CDA Expectations • Stands for Common District Assessment • Every Douglas County student enrolled in a high school math class will take the same exact test for that class. • These grades entered in the gradebook cannot be curved. • CDA’s are designed by teachers in the county. • Very important • CDA’s are used to place students in remediation or enrichment for ILT Georgia Milestones Georgia Milestones will be comprehensive and given at the midterm of academic year. Grading Plan Formative Assessments – 30% (Skills Checks, Daily Checks, Homework Assignments) Summative Assessment – 50% (Common Unit Assessment, Common District Assessment, Projects) Georgia Milestones – 20% Class Rules & Procedures Class Layout 1st Warm – Up: 10 - 15 minutes 2nd Instructions: Bulk of the class time 3rd Practice Problems: last 20 minutes of class 4th Closure: summarizing of concept 5th Homework presented Class Rules 1. Follow all LSHS Rules & Policies 2. Be respectful to your instructors and your peers. 3. Be responsible for your own learning. 4. Arrive prepared and on time. 5. Keep workstations clean and neat. 6. Electronics are not allowed in class. My spaces in the classroom are EVERYTHING else. Do not touch any part of my space unless requested by instructor. Class Expectations & Policies Class Policies • No make up (or “do-overs”) for any assignment • Extra credit will be given at the teachers discretion throughout the academic year. • If you’re absent and missed any assignments, it is your responsibility to come after school to complete assignments or zero will be given. • Late assignments are not accepted. • Cheating on any assignment will result in a zero as the final grade and a discipline referral. • All students are expected to seat in assigned seats at ALL times. Course Expectations 1. Regular attendance in the class is important for success in this rigorous course. 2. Consistently bring necessary materials to class. 3. Completing ALL homework assignments are essential for retaining concepts. 4. Participate in class discussions and activities 5. Question anything that is not fully understood Homework Expectations • • • • Homework will be given every night. Usually about 8 to 12 problems (not that much) Should not take more than 45 minutes Some of the problems will be easier than others. • If you have trouble with more than one or two problems, you SHOULD email me immediately. • If you just show up and say “I just did not understand” or “I just could not do it”, you will receive a zero.
