International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Amelia High School: IB World School West Clermont Schools The Diploma Programme: a brief video HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=YOG6Z7O8W10 What is the “IB” Program? • “IB” or International Baccalaureate® is a non-profit international educational foundation founded in 1968. • IB educational programs develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world • In a 2006 article in Education Week, Barmak Nassirian of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers called the Diploma Program “the best kept secret in high school reform” and the “gold standard of high school curriculum in admissions circles.” Facts and Figures • As of August 2015, there were 5,477 programs being offered worldwide, across 4,267 schools, spanning over 140 countries. • First coming to the US in 1971, there are 1675 IB World Schools, 869 of which offer the DP. • Here in Ohio, we have 18 schools, 2 in Cincinnati (Amelia and Princeton). • Indiana has 34, Kentucky has 7 IB World Schools What is the ‘Mission’? What is the Diploma Program? • Diploma Program (DP) is an assessed program for students aged 16 to 19. It is respected by leading universities across the globe. • As of May 2015, there are 2,795 schools offering the DP, in 143 different countries worldwide. • Focuses on 6 Academic Areas 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Language and Literature Language Acquisition Individual and Societies Sciences Mathematics Arts Benefits of the DP Program • 92% of diploma students in US high schools (2008-2014) enrolled in postsecondary institutions.2 – 78% immediately (National Avg. is 69%) – 95% of those that immediately enrolled were at 4-year institutions vs. national avg. of 60% – Retention Rates are also much higher. -- OH schools as of 2013 is 73% • IB students’ overall 4-year graduation rate (64%) and 6-year rate (81%) were higher than the national averages of 36% and 57% respectively.1 • In one of the largest group studies at University of California, IB students were found to have higher GPA’s throughout school, higher graduation rates; keeping other factors such as ethnicity, income, other higher level courses such as AP the same.3 Why Complete the Diploma Program? Diploma Candidates vs. Received Diplomas vs. Certificate Candidates. IB vs. AP (Advanced Placement)? • While both curricula have been linked to benefits within gifted students “the content of AP science and math courses often does not enable gifted students to achieve an in-depth understanding of the discipline”. • “Classroom observations and interviews with students and teachers also demonstrate that there is limited opportunity for the pursuit of individual interests or passions in these [AP] courses.” • “The IB program provides greater opportunity for in-depth pursuit of a topic and greater emphasis on deep understanding than on the acquisition of information.”4 • “For a student in 11th and 12th grade, IB is the better program…it has significantly more emphasis on writing than AP…and most students within this program stress that it prepared them well for college research.”5 The Impact of IB on College • A myriad of studies show the positive correlation between the IB program, postsecondary success, (including GPA, graduation rates and retention rates). • Acceptance Rates for IB students within colleges in the U.S. http://lakewaleshigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IB_University_Acceptance_Rates.pdf IB & “CAS” • International Baccalaureate® is committed to developing students who will make a meaningful contribution to the world, both during and after their education. • Therefore, the Diploma Programme (DP), includes Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) as one of the required components of the DP core • West Clermont’s vision of producing “future leaders and productive citizens” aligns perfectly with the CAS model. 3 Components of CAS • Creativity – arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking. • Activity – physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the DP. • Service – an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected Significance of CAS • Enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development by learning through experience. • Provides opportunities for self-determination and collaboration with others, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment from their work. • Each student must complete 150 CAS hours over the course of their junior and senior years Oh, the places they will go…..
