Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution
in the Holy Cross tradition,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
I wish you and your family and friends a most Happy
Thanksgiving Break for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday,
November 23 – 25.
We will not have any emails next week because of the
shortened week.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school
in the Holy Cross tradition,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
The Climate Audit Survey that I had mentioned previously will be sent to Sophomore and Seniors Parents and
students on Monday, November 28th. It can be completed any time before Thursday, December 8. Thank you in
advance for your participation on this survey.
Remember that our Open House will be on tomorrow, Thursday, November 17th from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. It includes a
sit down dinner for families with students considering Cathedral. Please encourage your friends to “come and
meet the Irish!”

Congratulations:
The AP United States Government /“We the People, The Citizen and the Constitution” is a semester-long co-curricular
course. The class or “team” studies how the foundations of our gov’t relate to present-day laws and
policies. The competition is a simulated congressional hearing, where students demonstrate their
knowledge while they evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary
constitutional issues. This is the first year for Cathedral High School to have a program and they
competed in Indiana’s 7th Congressional District Competition, Monday, November 14th at IUPU. We
congratulate our team, who won over the other five teams, and will progress to State Competition on
Sunday, December 18th. The “We the People…” program is a national program sponsored by the Center for Civic
2
Education, headquartered in Calabasas, California. All 50 states, District of Columbia, and several territories run the
competition. Congratulations team to great inaugural showing.

In anticipation of NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference) which starts this Thursday, I wanted to share this
information with Cathedral High School so that students, parents, administrators and faculty can witness the
conference from home or school!
 All of the NCYC general sessions, including the closing liturgy, will be streamed live via the internet. This is a great
way for family and friends who cannot be present to see the 22,000 high school youth at NCYC.
 Streaming will begin at approximately 8:00 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings and at approximately
9:00 am on Friday and Saturday mornings. A link to the stream will be available on the NFCYM website,
www.nfcym.org and the NCYC website, www.ncyc.info.
 Also, there will be streaming four workshop sessions specifically for parents on Friday and Saturday. The link to
these streams will be available from the same sites as above. The sessions are Friday from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm,
from 1:45 pm to 3:00 pm, and from 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm. On Saturday there is one session from 11:45 am to 1:00
pm.

Mrs. Kathy Keyes and Mr. Paul Brown, two of Cathedral’s teachers, made a trip to visit Jay Ruckelshaus this past
weekend in Atlanta, where he is receiving rehab at Shepherd Center. They took with them a number of
gifts for Jay – video of all of our students blessing him after last week’s assembly, an iPad2 with many
messages for him from faculty and students, and all of our good wishes for him. Mrs. Keyes and Mr. Brown
said the neatest thing was his excitement when he realized that he could type on the iPad 2 using a stylus
5
and that he could listen to some of Duke University’s classes broadcast online. With this, a whole world has opened for
him!

Ben Sasin, Student Journalist: On Friday, October 28th, Ben Sasin’s (’14) article was printed in the New Palestine
Reporter. I have included excerpts from Ben Sasin’s article below.
‘By Far the best Camporee yet’
Three awards and one ribbon were among what New Palestine’s own Boy Scout Troop
244 brought home Sunday, October 16, from the Pioneer Distract Fall Camporee.
The Troop was given the Spirit of Scouting Award and Best Skit and Song Award. Also,
Troop 244 was crowned champion of the tug of war competition on Saturday evening against 10
other troops.
“I had a lot of fun on this outing,” chaplain aid Cory Sitler said. “It was probably by far
the best camporee yet…. Sean (Webster) jumping up constantly saying ‘the Olympians are better’ was pretty
good.”
The lumberjack-theme camporee was held at Camp Ransburg in Bloomington, October 14 – 16.
Tomahawk throwing, the Lumberjack Carry, and Lumberjack Trivia and First Aid were only a few of the activities
Scouts were able to participate.
Near dinner time, the Cobra Patrol rushed to present their original spaghetti taco and a bread stick
specialty to the judges.
At the campfire Saturday night, most troops performed more than one skit or song. Troop 244 presented
“The Tree Climbing Skit with a Twist” and sang a lumberjack song.
When Boy Scouts think of Camp Ransburg, they think “hot, humid and sweaty,” though this time of year it’s
the opposite. I froze and woke up shivering like a little dog,” Olympians Patrol Leader Sean Webster said.
Packs 244 and 254 accompanied Troop 244 on the camp out, though they were eager to try the fun-filled
activities for themselves. The Cub Scouts wanted to explore beyond the frontier and visited Fossil Beach on the
shoreline of Lake Monroe. The Scouts, even the adults, were amazed by their discoveries. This outing for the Cub
Scouts gave them a glimpse of all that Boy Scouts has to offer.

Get a Jump on Life, with your Resume
Vol. 1. Number 1
(That Little Edge Makes the Big Difference)
by Jim Faulkner, CHS Computer Programming Instructor
Most people go to college to get a Job, or better yet, to create a long-term career.
Most people who go to college, exit with a resume that consist of non-career-oriented student summer jobs,
their grades, a few student affiliations, and some student honors. In the past, this may have been enough
to at least get a job, if not a great one. Today, such a "power-packed" resume, even with a 3.85 (out of 4.0),
many not pull in a job in the student's chosen field, at all.
The "Graduate" (Dustin Hoffman, 1969) was told, "I have one word for you -- PLASTICS."
Today, or 4 to 8 years from now, that "one word" might be -- "COMPUTERS" or "Technology". The more
important words, however, will be, "Internships", "On-the-Job Experience", and "your personal Network".
Three graduates with 4.0's and a "typical graduate's resume", will be easily trumpeted by one graduate with
a 3.5 and a list of internships, on-the-job-experience, and maybe a certification or two.
This is an important thrust of the Business and Technology Department at CHS, and especially the computer
related classes.
"…and so", he will say, "What have you done in our field lately? Real work experience, that is?"
Stay tuned to this column. Next week we will show you statistics about the jobs that are in demand now, and in the next
10 years. Even I was surprised with the overwhelming weight of technology and computer related skills that will be in
demand.

Senior Yearbook Portraits: For the sake of consistency in the book, all seniors must have their yearbook
picture taken at Prestige, even if they have had other senior pictures taken elsewhere. Don’t let your senior be
left out of his/her senior yearbook. Call for an appointment today. Call 317-829-2088 after 2 p.m. There is a
$15 sitting fee for those wanting the yearbook pose only. The deadline is Dec. 13.
Senior Parents.
As noted in the mailing you should have received dated October 6, the deadline for submitting an ad
honoring your graduating senior in the 1012 yearbook is Friday, Nov. 18. These ads represent a strong
tradition at Cathedral, so you won’t want your student to be one of the few omitted. If you did not receive an
order form or have misplaced it, please go to John Hannan’s Cathedral Web page, click on Journalism 2:
Yearbook, and then on the Advertising Information resource folder to download the order form. You may
also get there by clicking on this link: http://www.cathedral-irish.org/page.cfm?p=549. While the deadline is
important, we will accept orders after that date on a first-come-first-served basis while space and time allow.

Calendar Corrections:
1. There is no PLC listed in the bluebook on March 13. I want to you to be aware of this day is a PLC day.
2. Also, the math league listed in the blue book on February 14 has been moved to February 7.
The Jay Ruckelshaus Memorial Blood Drive was a huge success! Thanks to the 68 cathedral students and staff
who donated blood and to the 30 who tried, but were denied, Cathedral potentially saved 294 lives in just one day.

Here is an essay, written by one of our seniors and reprinted here with his consent.
True Wealth
9
Daniel Flood – Brownsburg, Indiana
Entered on December 15, 2010
Age Group: Under 18
Themes: charity & service, good & evil, goodness & kindness, humility
Share This Essay:
I’ve been to New Orleans and seen the destruction of Hurricane Katrina years after it passed; I’ve built houses in
South Carolina in an area where the average income is well below the national average; and I’ve
helped the homeless in my own city. Each person I have met while working has taught me a
different lesson: lessons that I will never forget. Some people stand out more than others, but one
man and the lessons he taught me stand out among the rest.
Biloxi, Mississippi was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A native Mississippian, David was a
frail 65 year old man who wore a stocking cap despite temperatures in the upper 80s. Hurricane
Katrina took its toll on David’s small house; it was beat up with beetles in the wall and holes in the ceiling. While we
took down the walls to replace the drywall and beetles fell on top of us, he stood a few feet behind us cracking jokes
and telling stories. We took breaks and David showed us a card trick, a coin trick, or some other magic trick meant
for a child. Despite being poor, he wore a smile on his face unmatched by any I have ever seen. How could a
person as poor as David be as happy as he was?
I believe money does not buy happiness. Money buys things: material possessions for material hearts. Americans
have forgotten that having money is a luxury, not a necessity. A life should not be focused on the pursuit of money,
rather the pursuit of happiness. David taught me to be content with the life that I have and not obsess over money.
He built up his happiness over years of living a life with a child’s innocence. Happiness cannot be bought. True
wealth can’t be measured in dollars. I believe true wealth can only be measured by a person’s soul. His house had
beetles in the walls and holes in the ceiling, but he is the richest person I know.

Tuition Assistance for 2012-2013
Families with students returning for 10th, 11th and/or 12th grade next year and who are interested in applying for
tuition assistance for next year can begin to do so as of November 1 and should apply by
February 15, 2012. The Enrollment Management Office recently mailed information about this process
to families who received need-based tuition assistance during the current school year, but families can
learn more by visiting www.gocathedral.com/tuition.



Also, there are a few key changes to the process for next year that impact returning families:
In the case of parents who are divorced or legally separated, Cathedral now requires each household to complete
the process.
Families now submit tax documentation directly to School & Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) instead of to
Cathedral.
Families will receive tuition assistance awards at the time of re-enrollment (April).
Important tuition assistance dates are as follows:
 November 1—Earliest date to apply for tuition assistance for 2012-2013 (http://sss.nais.org)
 December 31—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for incoming 9th graders (Class of 2016)
 February 15—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for returning students
Again, much more detail is available online at www.gocathedral.com/tuition.
Thank you,
11

Janice Gabe, well know social worker, will be at Cathedral in the Commons at 7:00PM on Thursday, Nov. 10 th. Ms.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“Those others have all made offering from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”
Lk 21:4. Like the widow who makes the selfless and total gift of her precious coins, may each of us be compelled to commit
our whole being to the Lord and to love and support our brothers and sisters through our service ministry. Our works in
service are opportunities for each of us to “find our delight in the Lord” and to evidence our aching determination to know
and serve our Lord.
Class Service Projects Class service projects become perfect opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Our
freshmen have supported the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Oct 12 with twelve bulging bags of toys and 750 pairs
of socks for families shopping at the Christmas Store in December. Click here for more details about the freshman class
service project in this month on November 17th and 18th. In December we will not host a tasty spaghetti dinner as it conflicts
with exams and another group is graciously performing this for us. Our next Sophomore class dinner will be on January 11
(4:00 PM-7:30 PM). On Saturday, Dec 10 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30-juniors) juniors will be preparing a
warm and toasty lunch, dialoging with the homeless, and passing out scarves competed at the Service Festival. The
Cathedral orchestra joined us on Nov 12 to serenade our guests and it was an awesome affair. Thanks for your efforts to
join us in these great ministries. Details on all of these class service projects in November and December are noted below in
Service Opportunities
Service Festival-Tuesday, November 15, 2011 On Tuesday, Nov 15, from 9:30-11:00, our students experienced
education and experiential learning projects in ten areas of societal needs. Ranging from low cost housing, special needs,
hunger, environmental watershed, homelessness, animal protection, teen court, Hispanic outreach and disease prevention
and compassionate support, our students were exposed to the missions of many not for profits in the community, we
learned about community problems, and acquired ways we can assist humanitarian needs in Indianapolis. Experiential
learning projects included therapeutic riding horses in the parking lots, rescue dogs not for profits, special needs service
dogs, building model Habitat homes for fundraising, constructing feral cat shelters, making scarves for the homeless,
creating soothing photos and poetry for cancer recovery support packets, and assembling many outreach household
packets centered around healthy lifestyles, environmental watershed concerns, the importance of reading, and fire safety
kits for the Hispanic community. The blend of experiential learning and societal needs education was quite invigorating for
all of us.
17
Parent Volunteers For The Service Festival On November 15th, many parents assisted from the Mother’s club and our
Cathedral Moms in Touch prayer leaders. Your help was greatly appreciated on our experiential learning day. Thanks so
much!
Peru Mission Trip Further details about our fourth Peru mission trip are available on the website. We have asked that the
first trip deposit of $600 and your application be turned in by December 1 so that we can get some flights booked for our
travel. Many students are interested in the upcoming summer mission to Peru and the children’s home (Hogar) in
Chaclacayo. It is an enthralling opportunity to enjoy a service, language and cultural adventure in Lima and Cuzco, Peru.
Over seventy five children are cared for by Dr. Tony Lazarra at the Hogar. For the application, click here.
NOLA Here is the a video about some of our work in New Orleans from WWL TV8 in New Orleans:
:http://www.wwltv.com/video/featured-videos/Quiet-Hero-Woman-leads-group-to-preserve-gravesites-of-the-poor133561603.html. This covers one aspect of the work in our mission trip to New Orleans. Ten students worked at Holt
Cemetery with Dr. Greer in 2010 and, through initiatives by sophomores Sam White and Olivia Burris this year, this work by
twenty five students this year advanced to a more complex and improved contribution. Sophomore Olivia Burris speaks
compellingly about the importance of dignity in the video with Sally-Ann Roberts from New Orleans. In the background, the
work by our students is visible as they form three retainer walls and groom the graves in Holt Cemetery. Very clearly from
the video, it is evident that Holt Cemetery still has many needs. Our students choose to return again next year to continue
their contributions to the dignity of this burial grounds. Mr. Keith Kaminskas, parent of freshman Kaitlyn Kaminskas, directed
our concrete work at Holt and we are most appreciative of his contribution. We met an important special hero in Bobbiann
Lewis from Delgado Cemetery as she embodies servant leadership in its fullest dimension.
Forty nine students and eight chaperones learned about the challenges still facing the Lower Ninth Ward in its post –Katrina
reconstruction as well as substantial assistance greatly needed in Holt Cemetery. We returned home inspired by the
laughter, music and passionate, caring hearts of all that we met in the Big Easy! Don’t forget our NOLA celebration dinner
on Tuesday, November 29 in the SLC at 6:30 PM. Many thanks to all of our wonderful adult chaperones!!

Meditation: Luke 19:11-28
“He proceeded to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God would
appear there immediately.” (Luke 19:11)
Excitement was building. Jesus was headed to Jerusalem, the political and spiritual center of Israel. Like the nobleman in
today’s parable, Jesus was on a journey “to obtain kingship” (Luke 19:12). And like this nobleman, Jesus faced strong
opposition from those who did not want to acknowledge his reign (19:14).
But this parable isn’t about the intrigue surrounding whether the nobleman would be successful in his bid for kingship. It’s
about the people who were already loyal to him, the servants who maintained his household. How would they spend the
time while awaiting their master’s return? Would they invest in the coming kingdom, confident in their master’s claim and in
29
his authority as king? Or would they hedge their bets, not sure whether their master would triumph? In other words, did they
believe in him, and did their faith translate into action?
Like the nobleman in the parable, Jesus is still awaiting kingship. He is still waiting for every knee to bow to him and for
everyone to accept his rule and reign at the end of time (Philippians 2:10). And like the servants awaiting their master’s
return, each of us faces the same set of questions: “Will I invest in the coming kingdom? Do I believe in Jesus? Does my
faith translate into action?”
The two servants who multiplied what was given to them invested their whole lives in the kingdom. They chose to live as if
that kingdom were already fully present. They chose to take risks, and in so doing, they gained tremendous profits for the
master.
This is how God wants us to live. We can double what God has given to us by treating everyone with mercy and
generosity. We can even triple the profit as we devote ourselves to telling people about Jesus in the hope that they
too will embrace him as their king. Let’s take some risks for this kingdom. Jesus promises great rewards for all
who do!
“Jesus, I want to follow you, whatever the cost. Help me to live today as a citizen of your coming kingdom.”
Blessings,
