Background Information

Continues using plastic bag
Lack of knowledge in recycling
Background Information
“Awareness of recycling among the public and willingness to recycle is
high but the lack of Infrastructure and legislative support causes a high
level of frustration mixed with Cynicism. The over-reliance on (the same
group of) volunteers may leave community Recycling programmes and
activities vulnerable to exhaustion and failing momentum. However,
household composting efforts being promoted have gained strong
acceptance Among the people of Penang.”(P.2) - Penang Economic Monthly,
September 2008 Volume 10, Issue 9

“One of Phee’s ideas for a green state is the 100 Steps to Cleanliness
programme that will place decorative 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle)
bins on the sides of major roads and at tourists spots. These solarpowered decorative bins are fully private-sponsored, and the council
collects advertisement revenue from the operator. The main objective of
such bins is to act as a constant reminder for people to segregate their
waste.” – penangmonthly.com/ideas-and-actions-for-a-green-state/, feature – December 22, 2011

Notes: “Now days, Many people do not recycle simply because they
are unfamiliar with their town's recycling procedures and pick-up
times. Studies about how materials need to be prepared (example :
boxes cut, labels remove) have led people to abandon recycling
altogether. Recycling has been more prevalent in communities where
funding was put toward raising community awareness about the
specifications of the recycling program.”

Cleanliness programme that will locale decorative 3R (Reduce, Reuse

These solar-powered decorative bins are fully private-sponsored,
and the council accumulates advertisement revenue from the
operator. The main goal of such bins is to deed as a steady
reminder for people to segregate their waste.”
Background Information
“Plastic bags are the cause of major environmental concerns. Statistics show
that we are consuming more and more plastics every year. It is estimated
that an average individual uses around 130 plastic bags per year.”

“ Most of them go straight to our landfill and a very small percentage of
plastic bags are actually recycled. A reduction in our use of plastic bags is
essential in solving the environmental problems stemming from them.
The most effective way of reducing the amount of plastic litter in the
environment is to reduce our consumption. As consumers, we should not
wait for our governments to tackle the problem of plastic bags. Change
ultimately comes from everyone be it from to law restrictions of our
government or from our own volition. Moreover, the most important
contribution to such a campaign must come from the consumer. ” http://www.mindfully.org/berkeley/berkeley-plastic-past-force.htm - report of the Berkley task force.

stemming from them.”
Notes: “The most competent method of cutting the number of plastic
litter in the nature is to reduce our consumption. As customers, we
ought to not pause for our powers to tackle the setback of plastic
bags. Change in the end comes from everyone be it from to
regulation limits of our power or from our own volition. Moreover,
the most vital contribution to such a crusade have to come from the
consumer.”

At the moment, many major political parties in the Penang are making
policies on waste and recycling. One of the main arguments airs whether or
not rubbish bins should be collected weekly or fortnightly. Their idea is that
they should collect the rubbish bins every fortnight, rather than every week,
and also that recycling bins should be collected every week. This is a good
idea in many ways, because if people's bins are not emptied every week,
but their recycling bins are it will force more people to recycle. However
many people believe that this is just a money saving scheme as tipping the
rubbish is extremely expensive. Also many people are concerned about
hygiene, if the bins are not emptied and people refuse to recycle then they
may dump their rubbish in the street.
Another political idea is to measure the weight of the rubbish and charge
people accordingly. The government propose that the heavier the rubbish,
the more you get charged. This is to encourage people to do more recycling
and to get rid of less waste.

extra reprocessing and to become clear of less rubbish.”

The Overpopulation are hardly solved .
Many of us have grown up learning and being told that
6 billion is too much and this "over population" is
primarily impacting the planet's ability to cope. But is
that really the case? Sure, the planet is facing
incredible stress.
Studies point to ecological limits to sustain people, but
these limits can be different, based on the way we
consume resources etc so it is hard to say for sure what
over population means let alone if we are at some
threshold, below, or above it. - Peach EU forums Addict Posts: 467Joined: 17

Research Questions



How serious is the problem of garbage pollution in
Bayan Lepas?
What can be done to minimize of solve the
problems?
How far the people knows about the important
recycling program?
Significance of the Studies



To help the environment from the pollution
To prevent the usage of Plastic Bag
To improve human mindset about waste and
recycling in community life
Significance of The Research

By recycling, the recyclable items can end up being reused
into new containers, reducing greenhouse gases and saving
landfills time and money. According to Julie Boehlke (2010)
“the National Geographic website explains that making
changes to our lifestyle helps put money in our pockets and
reduces pollution that can deteriorate the earth's ozone
layer”. By not using plastic bag, it helps in saving a lot of
space that usually gets wasted while making landfills for
waste. Also, it can conserve natural resources for our future
generations. This will bring a good environment and healthy
living for the people in Bayan Lepas.
Scope


Plastic waste cases in Bayan Lepas
Disposal & Recycling garbage case in community
Scope of The Study

This studies is designed to provide information on environmental
issue specifically in waste disposal, usage of plastic bag and the
important of recycling. According to Julie Boehlke (2010) “the
Green Student U website states that most people produce up to five
pounds of trash per day, which can easily add up to around 50 tons
of trash per year”. According to the statistics from MPPP (2010)
“there are 32 recycling companies in Penang but most of the people
are not aware of the companies”. This studies will help to inform the
public on the existing of these companies and reduce the problems
of waste disposal. The findings of this study will be gathered from
questionnaire and observation throughout Bayan Lepas area, which
includes some of people in the age of 18-40 in the restaurants,
neighbourhoods and schools area. The results from the survey will be
collected from the people in the survey area.
