• The diagram shows Rosalind
Franklin’s x-ray diffraction image
of DNA. How did this evidence
affect the work of Watson and
Crick?
– A. It was used to determine the
physical structure of DNA.
– B. It was used to identify the four
bases that make up DNA.
– C. It was used to develop the theory
of independent assortment.
– D. It was used to show that DNA
was the molecule of inheritance.

paragraph describe the process of
photosynthesis
• Outline 12-2 Due Tuesday, Quiz Tuesday
• Outline 12-3 Due Thursday, Quiz Friday
• No school tomorrow.
• Sub on Monday:
– Use the workbooks. Section 12-2
DNA – deoxyribonucleic acid
3 Functions of DNA:
1. To store and use information to
direct the activity’s of the cell
2. To copy itself exactly in order to
form new cells
3. Must be able to pass copies of
their DNA to offspring in order to
keep species from going extinct
DNA Nucleotides
• Made of 3 parts:
1. phosphate molecule
2. sugar molecule – deoxyribose
3. nitrogen base – can be 1 of the 4 below:
- adenine
- thymine
- cytosine
- guanine
**sugar & phosphate molecules are
ALWAYS THE SAME IN EVERY NUCLEOTIDE
Create your own DNA Molecule
• On the back of your nucleotide
handout write..
– 3 Red “A” - Adenine
– 3 Green “T” - Thymine
– 3 Blue “C” – Cytosine
– 3 Yellow “G” – Guanine
– 12 Black “Phosphate Groups”
– 12 White “ Sugar” - Deoxyribose

•
Follow Chargoff’s Rules!
Step 1: Cut out templates.
Step 2: Cut your nucleotides
Step 3: Pair your nucleotides together.
Step 4: Link them together with the
sugar and phosphate groups.
• Step 5: Sit back and look with awe at
your completed DNA molecule.
Answer the following questions in your
notebook…
• Choose one side of your DNA molecule to be
your leading strand.
– What is your final DNA sequence?
• What is your final complementary sequence?
– This is the DNA strand that is opposite your leading
strand.
• Make a prediction what would happen if you
made a mistake in your DNA molecule. Would
the structure be different? Would the nucleotides
match?
• What do you think happens when this occurs
inside your cells?
