Anna Harding Assistant Registrar Research (aijh1@le.ac.uk) SECTION ONE The funding will focus on situations where a new appointment will help address a well established skills gap; a new role would complement and support existing Research Council investment and would reinforce the university's strategy; and where the individual demonstrably has skills and abilities needed but cannot readily be accommodated within existing vacancies or funded programmes. THE BIG LOTTERY FUND The Big Lottery Fund will provide up to £20 million to fund social, medical or socio-medical research led by voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Research programme aims to influence local and national policy and practice by funding VCS organisations to produce and disseminate evidence-based knowledge. In the longer term the programme, through producing sound evidence, aims to help develop better services and support for beneficiaries. Grants of between £10,000 and £500,000 are available for research projects lasting up to five years. If you intend to apply for a Research grant in the final round of the programme, we ask you to send us a brief outline of your project before you send us your full application. We will use the Project Outline only to identify appropriate peer reviewers for your project and to help us plan the assessment process. We will not assess your Project Outline or use it to provide you with feedback about your application. You can download the Project Outline form here , request the form from the programme helpline via email, or tel: 0845 0711068) Please return your completed Project Outline form before 5pm, Tuesday 31 March 2009. Click the 'Registration' button below to open the on-line registration form. RESEARCH COUNCILS TO LAUNCH SKILLS GAP AWARDS (SGAS) Given the very rapid changes in the UK and global economies there are opportunities for UK universities to ensure that high quality scientific or research support skills in areas previously hard to recruit, are retained in the UK. Accordingly three Research Councils - BBSRC, EPSRC and MRC - will shortly launch interim and fast-track Skills Gap Awards for biological and medical research. New and limited funding will be made available for start-up funding for appointments in universities relevant to biotechnology or biomedical research which addresses important skills needs. The MRC will lead on this initiative. 1 The MRC has written to selected UK universities with details of how to apply. Further arrangements for supporting two-way academic industry exchanges will be announced during Spring 2009. Funding up to £475,000 per project is available for three years duration. The application process will be in two stages, with outline proposals being invited in the first instance. The closing date for submission of outline proposals is 24 February 2009 at 1.00 pm. NIHR SDO PROGRAMME – PRIMARY CARE AND COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES. The NIHR SDO Programme invites proposals to examine the range of community health care services including nursing, pharmacy, dental services, opticians and other allied health professional services where there has been limited research to date. Funding up to £475,000 per project is available for three years duration. The application process will be in two stages, with outline proposals being invited in the first instance. The closing date for submission of outline proposals is 19 February 2009 at 1.00 pm. NIHR RESEARCH FOR PATIENT BENEFIT (RFPB) PROGRAMME This national response-mode programme is for high quality investigator-led research projects that address issues of importance to the NHS. It funds research into everyday practice in the health service. Proposals will be identified by health service staff, and developed by them with appropriate academic input. All proposals must show evidence from systematic reviews to ensure patient safety and value for money. The RfPB programme funds research that has a clear focus on day-today practice within the NHS. Implementation Plan 6.2a has full details of the RfPB Programme. Created by A Harding, Assistant Registrar, aijh1@le.ac.uk 22/03/2016 Applications are accepted at any time and will be considered at the next available Regional Committee. All researchers in England are eligible to apply. Joint applications from NHS researchers with academic partners are welcome although funding will normally be awarded to the NHS partner. Researchers may find it helpful to consult the feedback provided by the Director of the Programme, if they intend to apply for future competitions. Further details about how to apply to the RfPB scheme is available through the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility. MRC COLLABORATION GRANTS The aim of a collaboration grant is to add value to the participants’ research programmes, by enabling them to work together in a way that could not be funded through an MRC research grant. The MRC research grant and trial grant schemes can provide funds for travel and shared equipment. The collaboration grant scheme, however, is for applicants who need a higher level of funding for collaborative working than for their core research costs. It can be used to: Support cooperative research with high core costs. Support complex cooperative links across several research bodies. Develop research networks. Promote international ‘twinning’ and collaborations, if the applicants are not eligible for EU or Human Frontiers Science Programme funding. A collaboration grant may be for any period of between two to five years. BBSRC A joint BBSRC/NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON AGING PARTNERING AWARD scheme to support collaborative research on the biology of ageing. Letter of intent deadline: 10 February 2009 Application deadline: 10 March 2009 BIOTECHNOLOGY YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS SCHEME (YES) Application deadline: 29 May 2009 Teams* benefit from entrepreneurial awareness training, and present their plans for hypothetical businesses to real entrepreneurs, financiers and industrialists. So far, over 2000 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers have benefited from the mentoring, practical workshops and advice from this competition. The competition is supported by a large number of companies and coorganised by BBSRC and UNIEI. ESRC PROFESSORIAL FELLOWSHIP SCHEME 2008-09 COMPETITION The ESRC invites applications under the seventh round of the Professorial Fellowship Scheme. The scheme is designed to support leading social scientists working in the UK, by providing them with the freedom to pursue their own innovative and creative research agendas. (Closing date for applications: 4pm on 12 February 2009) NERC Announcement of Opportunity: Follow-on Fund Applications are invited to the first round of the 2009 Follow-on Fund. The closing date is 28 Jan 2009 WELLCOME TRUST PRINCIPAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS This is the most prestigious of our personal awards and provides long-term support for researchers of international standing. Successful candidates will have an established track record in research at the highest level. Awards are for seven years in the first instance, and provide both a personal salary and research programme funding in full. 2 WELLCOME TRUST TRANSLATION AWARDS Translation Awards are response-mode funding designed to bridge the funding gap in the commercialisation of new technologies in the biomedical area. Projects covering any aspect of technology development from a range of disciplines - including physical, computational and life sciences will be considered. Projects must address an unmet need in healthcare or in applied medical research, offer a potential new solution, and have a realistic expectation that the innovation will be developed further by the market. Next pre-lim deadline is 6th Feb 2009. The important criterion is to develop the innovation to the point at which it can be adopted by another party. Providing it is adequately justified, modest equipment purchase and maintenance costs may be included in a Translation Award application. Building or refurbishment expenditure will not normally be considered. Applications may not include requests for academic institutional overheads. If you hold a tenured university post, you may not re-charge your salary (in full or part) to a Translation Award. See allowed costs and disallowed costs for further information on what is and is not included. MEDICAL/SCIENCE DEGREES The Foulkes Foundation invites applications for its fellowships programme. The awards promote medical research through support for science graduates who need to undertake a medical degree before they can undertake medical research and similarly for medical graduates who need a science degree.
