1.1 Line Symmetry
Math 9
What is line symmetry?
a line that divides a figure into two reflected parts
A line of symmetry may also be called a:
1) A line of reflection
2) Axis of symmetry
How many lines of symmetry may a given figure have? Draw an
example for each to illustrate this.
0, 1 or more.
Are lines of symmetry always vertical?
No, they can be horizontal or oblique (slanted)
Examples
Draw all the lines of symmetry that are possible for these
figures.
The following drawings represent half a figure and the dashed
lines are the lines of symmetry. Using your knowledge of line
symmetry, complete the other half of each of the figures
Is there a figure that has an infinite number of lines of
symmetry? If so, what is it called?
