plural and singular, number of letters, alphabetical order Z-A, beginning letter,
ending letter, double letters, compound words, prefixes/suffixes, base words
Letter Tiles – Use to write words, play scrabble, make a crossword puzzle
Word Tiles and Letter Tiles – Use to write sentences or definitions
Concentration Single player – flip over two words, if the spelling pattern is the same, keep the
pair. If not, flip back over. Go again.
Partners – same sorts – mix up all of your words. Flip two over, if the same word,
keep the pair and go again. If not, flip back over and it’s your partner’s turn.
Make sure you each put your initials on the fronts of your words to separate them
at the end of the game!!!
Alphabetize your words – Do as a full set OR sort by spelling pattern and put in
abc order within the pattern.
Balderdash – Play with a partner. Write 3 definitions for a word. Only one is the
correct definition. Your partner has to guess the correct definition. Take turns.
Sentences – Write sentences for 12 of your words. You may put up to 2 words
from your sort into each sentence. Words must be used properly!!
Invent-a-Word – Invent at least 6 new words that follow the spelling patterns in
your sort. Write a definition for the word. This works well with sorts that have
prefixes or suffixes.
Example: prelaundry – dividing up your laundry before you wash it!
Draw pictures – Draw pictures for your words. Label the pictures.
Word Hunt – Use a magazine or newspaper or article printed off the computer
and search for your words. Use a highlighter to highlight words you find.
Word-O – Take a word from your sorting list and make a new word by changing
one letter.
Examples: tub
cub
take
cake
why
who
No Vowels/ No Consonants –
1. Rewrite your sorting list putting dashes where there are vowels.
Example: here
h-rhear
h--r
2. Write the list putting dashes where there are consonants.
Example: here
-e-e
hear
-eaAdding On – Add plural endings, -ed, -ing, prefixes or suffixes to your words
when possible to words on your list.
Same/Different – Write synonyms or antonyms for words on your sort.
Headbands – Hold a word against your forehead. Your partner has to give clues
for the word and then you guess the word. The clues can be about the meaning or
the spelling patterns found in the word.
Homophone Pair-Up – Pair up the homophones on your word sort. Make sure
you understand the difference in the meanings of the words!!
Roll and Spell – Use the guide for “Roll and Spell” and do what the die
instructions are for writing your words.
Switch and Fix – Sort your words. Work with a partner to switch cards around.
Close your eyes while your partner mixes up 1-3 word cards. Find the changes!!!
