Science Vocabulary Study Guide- Matter & Chemical Change Atom- the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of the element Molecule-a group of two or more atoms that are joined chemically Element- a substance made of only one kind of atom Change of State- a physical change that occurs when matter changes from one state to another, such as from a liquid to a gas Physical Change- a change in which a substance remains the same substance Mixture- a combination of two or more different substances Physical Property –a trait –such as color, shape, or hardness, that describes a substance by itself Chemical Property- a property that involves the ability of a substance to react with other materials to form new substances Chemical Reaction – a change in which one or more new substances are formed Compound- a substance made of two or more different elements Law of Conservation of Mass- the mass of the products of a chemical reaction equals the mass of the reaction. Balance- a tool that measures an object’s mass Matter- is what all objects are made of, it is anything that has mass & takes up space. Mass – is the amount of matter that is in an object. Length- is the distance between two points Weight – is the force of gravity between Earth & an object Solid- a form of matter that has a definite shape & takes up a definite amount of space Solubility- the ability of a substance to be dissolved by another substance Solute- a substance that is dissolved by another substance to form a solution Solution- a mixture of substance that are blended so completely that the mixture looks the same everywhere Solvent- a substance that dissolves one or more other substances to form a solution Property- a characteristic of matter that can be observed, such as mass, volume, weight, or density Volume- a measure of how much space an object takes up space Neutron- a particle in the nucleus of an atom that has no net electrical charge Gas- a form of matter that does not take up a definite amount of space &has no definite shape Electron- a particle in the space outside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of negative electric charge Density- a measure of how tightly packed the matter in an object is
