01.06 Bone Tissue Assignment To receive the maximum score of 36 points on this assignment, there are 3 components you must complete. Please refer to the rubric on Page 6 of 1.06 to examine how each section will be scored by your instructor. 1) Bone Sketch: Before you build anything, you want to draw out a basic design of your bone. In your drawing, please be sure to include the following….. Compact and spongy bone (cells that make up this tissue) Structures inside the bone (Haversian canal, canaliculi, Volkmann's canal, blood vessels) Structures on the outside of the bone (periosteum) There is an awesome template for you to use on the next page if you’d like. You just need to fill in the boxes with the correct terminology. 2) Bone Model: Based on what you have learned, use simple materials, like newspaper, cardboard, and tape to create a model of a bone that includes some of the parts and defining characteristics of bone tissue. You will use your model to demonstrate a function that is possible based on the characteristic/s represented in your bone. For your bone model, you may choose from any one of the three options below. Create a structure that will bear the weight of a textbook. The most common bone of choice is the femur due to its size and location. You want to take a picture of your bone balancing the weight of the textbook. Create a structure that will protect something soft. A good example would be the ribs. Please include a picture of this to show off your hard work Create a structure that allows movement between two bones. This can be used with arm and leg bones that connect at a joint (elbow, knee, shoulder, etc). Please include a picture of this to show off your hard work. 3) Conclusion Questions: Once you are finished with your sketch and your model, please complete the conclusion questions at the bottom of this document. You want to answer using complete sentences, and have enough information in your answer to cover the entire question. 1. Bone Diagram Label the diagram below (Hint: See lesson page 3. 2. Bone Model You will take a picture of your bone model and attach it to the 1.06 assessment. It’s best to save your picture as a .jpg file. 3. Conclusion Questions 1. What components of real bone tissue did you include in your model? (Hint: See lesson pages 3-4.) 2. What components of real bone tissue did you have trouble including in your model? Why? 3. What are the roles of osteocytes, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts in bone repair? (Hint: See the Bone Cell Chart on lesson page 3.) Osteocytes – Osteoblasts – Osteoclasts – 4. If you had to redesign your model, what would you do differently?
