Course description: This is an introduction course and will provide a foundation for further coursework in
Chemistry in high school or in college. A wide range of topics is covered with a strong orientation toward
applied math concepts in a science setting. Hands-on activities will be used to explain various aspects of the
course. Structure of matter as well as interactions of matter will be covered.
Units covered:
Semester 1
#1 Chemistry in Our Lives
#3 Matter and Energy
#2 Measurements
Lab Safety
#4 Atoms and Elements
#5 Electrons Structure and Periodic Trends
#6 Ionic and Molecular Compounds
#7 Chemical Quantities
#8 Chemical Reactions
Grading Scale:
90 –100% A
80 – 89% B
Semester 2
#9 Chemical Quantities in Reactions
#10 Properties of Solids and Liquids
#11 Gases
#12 Solutions
Thermochemistry/Energy
#13 Reaction Rates/Chemical Equilibrium
#14 Acids and Bases
#15 Oxidation-Reduction Reactions (include
Electrochemistry)
#16 Nuclear Chemistry
below 60% F
70 – 79% C
60 –69% D
Grades are weighted as follows:
80% from tests & quizzes(notebook grade is included in the Test area)

20% from homework and labs
Material needed: scientific calculator (a TI-30 or higher), pencil, paper, and 3-ring notebook (2”-3” will work)

Notebook Specifications: (I will also give this information out by a PowerPoint later.)
100 pts. each semester (This counts as one Test Score per Semester)
Includes the following tabbed areas
1. Reference material/Charts (page #1 is this page)
2. Each Chapter Tab shall contain the following information
a. Vocabulary
b. Notes
c. Homework (worksheets and bookwork)
d. Quizzes
3. Tests Tab
Shall contain the test w/ corrections on separate sheet…all corrections
must have the questions written out corrected and the correction supported
by new calculations or referenced in book/notes.
**Each section should be in chronological order.
Labs: Write ups or questions over lab will be due following each lab.
Cheating: This action will result in a zero on the assignment and could also result in a referral to your Principal
Attendance/Tardies
Make sure you are in class every day. It will be beneficial in your learning the content. If you are just
entering the room or wandering around without a purpose, you will be counted tardy. Tardies will be followed
according to school policy (warning on 2nd tardy…referral on 3rd).
Assignments: Daily assignments are given with the intended purpose of improving the students understanding
of the topics being presented in class. THEY ARE NOT OPTIONAL. Some assignments will be given for
‘completion’ credit and checked in class, some assignments will be collected and ‘graded’, and other assignments
will not be taken at all. It is the teacher’s decision on whether or not an assignment will be taken for credit.

Tests are designed to allow plenty of time to finish during given time. Extra time is not given,
unless some special need is known.
Testing Rules…No talking, cell phones, or headphones during a test or quiz (the use of
headphones or cell phones during a test will result in an automatic zero)
Cell Phones may be used between classes and at lunch so DO NOT let me see them during class
Absences: Assignments are always given, so it is your responsibility to get all assignments missed.
Feel free to e-mail me at any time.
If you are absent for a test or a quiz you will take the test or quiz the next time you are in class.
An alternative tests/quiz may be given.
A substitute assignment may be given will be given if a lab is missed.
For extended absences you will be given 5 school days to turn in any missed homework or quiz.
Do not turn your homework in late. Late work will not be given any points.
The purpose of homework is to prepare you for the test. Therefore, homework is due before the
test, not after.
No homework over a section will be taken once the test has been given. Don't ask!!
We are in a lab area so NO FOOD will be allowed in the room.
“Rule of 5” – we will have 5 questions on every test from previously covered material.
