Direct quotation: use of a word, phrase, sentence or passage copied exactly from a source. Entry: all publication information about one of the sources put on the Works Cited page MLA citation style: refers to the rules and conventions established by the Modern Language Association for acknowledging sources used in a research paper Paraphrase: restating original text by rewording and by changing sentence structure. Parenthetical citation: using parentheses to enclose documentation information. Research Process: steps for accessing, using and evaluating information. Thesis statement: one sentence that states the limited subject and focus or direction of the paper. Rules of Works Cited Page Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. It should have the same one-inch margins and last name, page number header as the rest of your paper. Label the page Works Cited (do not italicize the words Works Cited or put them in quotation marks) and center the words Works Cited at the top of the page. Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries. Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations by creating a hanging indent. Entries are listed alphabetically by the author's last name or the title. Italicized: titles of websites, names of journals, titles of databases, titles of books, PowerPoint rules Custom animations should be used to prevent the viewer from reading points not yet discussed. Do not put too many pictures on the slides Avoid clusters, crowded slides Do not use paragraphs Use bullet points Ideally, you should have five or less bullet points per slide. For certain presentations it is useful to have a table of contents as it helps to prepare the listener for the speech that will ensue. You should not rely solely on your PowerPoint, but rather memorize, know you material You should always use bright, visible colors for your font. Three effective ways to portray confidence is to have proper posture, effective gestures, and have a proper facial expression. Move your hands with purpose If you have notes, you should hold them in one hand in order to keep the other hand open Know you speech If there is any background noise you should lift your voice up to remain audible Speaking in a higher pitch will help you project your voice further To control your pace, you can use pauses to help keep you at a good speed During the speech, you should try to make contact with every individual in the room.
