How to Start a Class
Effectively
Start Smart
How do you get your class started?
Effective Teachers PRIORITIZE by getting
students TO WORK as SOON AS CLASS
STARTS! GET IN ---- GET Started!
Students need to know that when they come
they have a ROUTINE to follow.
GET
TO
WORK
3 things can help students easily get to
work
– They have an assignment ready for them
– They know where to find the assignment
– They know why they are doing the assignment
Chapter
15
Starting class effectively involves getting
students to work immediately.
TEACHERS ARE/HAVE
READY
TEACHERS SHOULD HAVE
SOMETHING FOR THE
STUDENTS TO DO:
BELL WORK
ACTIVITIES
ASSESSMENTS
CONSISTENT
*ASSIGNMENTS SHOULD
BE POSTED IN THE SAME
LOCATION EVERYDAY!
*INFORM STUDENTS
WHERE TO FIND THEM
A ROUTINE
EFFECTIVE TEACHERS
CREATE PROCEDURES
AND THEIR STUDENTS
KNOW MORNING
ROUTINES
When and How to Take Role
GREET
SEAT
Effective teachers have
students who they know and
greet while they enter class
Students know to enter the
room quickly and find their
seat
FIND
Students are taught where
to look for assignments and
WORK
Immediately DO THEM!

INSTRUCTIONAL
TIME IS LIMITED
Taking role =

Role

Cats
Vs.
Kitties
Rules and Procedures:
•Separate into two large groups according to stickers
•A question will be read to you. As a group come up with an answer.
•Only the group with all students raising their PAWS will be called
•If you get it right, you get to choose where to drop your disc.
•If you get it wrong, then the other group has the chance to steal.
•We are going to take turns even though you get it right.
• Cats will use RED disc and Kitties will use BLUE disc.
•There are 8 columns and 6 rows.
•The object is to connect 4 either diagonally, horizontally or vertically.
•This game is similar to tic-tac-toe.
•And remember have fun, no teasing the other groups, if it gets to loud we will stop
the game. The object of the game is to win but importantly REVIEW WHAT WE
