The prerequisite for this course is Biology I. I expect that you are able to review material from Biology I and study this material in order to prepare for exams. I will not lecture at length about material covered in Biology I but I will be happy to answer specific questions about the material if time permits. This applies specifically but is not limited to Chapter 2, Chapter 5 (except section 5.6), Chapter 7, (section 7.1 only), Chapter 8 and most of Chapter 9. If you have not taken Biology I and have received a red card to enter this class then you should be advised that you are at risk. 2. There are 5 scheduled exams, which will account for 75% of your grade. If you miss an exam and do not contact me prior to the exam you will receive a zero for that exam. If you do contact me we will schedule an all essay make up exam. Exam seating will be every other row, every other chair and you will be expected to relocate if requested. Please come prepared with two pencils and a working eraser. All cell phones will be turned off and placed in a box on my instructor’s table at the beginning of the exam and can be retrieved after you turn your test in to me. 3. Copying your classmate’s work on exams and lab assignments will not be tolerated. The penalty for the first offense will be a zero for that assignment or exam. The penalty for the second offense will be an assignment of an F for the semester and removal from the course. 4. The lab component will be 25% of your final grade. We will have lab time every class period and there are no make ups for missed exercises. You will be given 5 completion points for every lab that you attend and complete. You will answer the assigned review questions and critical thinking questions for a maximum of 5 more points( 10 pts total/lab). If you do not attend lab for any reason do not expect to receive your 5 completion points. I will drop you 2 lowest lab exercise grades. You are responsible for obtaining a copy of the Microbiology lab safety procedures from the Biology department web site and if you violate them you will not be allowed to enter the lab or you will be asked to leave without finishing your lab work. 5. There are three scheduled seminar dates. You will be expected to read a research paper that is relevant to the topics we have discussed in class. You will also prepare a brief (5-10 minute) summary of the article and present this to the class. If you have difficulty understanding these papers I expect you to ask me for assistance. Please refer to the seminar guidelines for more details. 6. You may not answer your cell phone in my class. The class would appreciate it if you set the ringer to silent while in lecture and if you need to answer your phone, please excuse yourself from the room first. All cell phones must be out of sight during exams. 7. You may not use electronic devices in class or during exams these include but are not limited to electronic translators, PDAs, cell phones, or tape recorders. If you find it necessary to use one of these devices without my permission you will be asked to leave the classroom and your exam will be considered finished. 8. If I determine that you are engaging in inappropriate classroom behavior (such as constant talking during lecture, speaking disrespectfully to me, other professors, staff or other students) I will call security and request to have you removed from the course. This is a tentative schedule and I will inform you of any changes as soon as possible. Exams will be held only after all the schedule material has been addressed in class.
