BIOLOGY 1406
COURSE OBJECTIVES: The goal of the course is for the students to develop a thorough
understanding of biology of microorganisms including morphology, metabolism, taxonomy,
culture techniques, microbial genetics, immunology, virology, mycology, parasitology and
diseases. Students will also have hands-on experience on handling live microorganisms using
aseptic techniques and applying various staining procedures used for identification of bacteria.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:
1. Textbook and Lab Manual are required.
2. Class attendance is mandated by the state. Attendance will be given only if you attend the full
class period. Coming late to the lecture or leaving early is considered as disruption. More than
two absences may result in administrative withdrawal. You are responsible for everything
covered or announced during your absence.
3. To avoid disruption in the classroom, all pagers and the cell phones must be set on the
silence mode. “Text Messaging” is not allowed during the lecture and lab sessions.
4. Children or anybody who is not officially enrolled in this class are not allowed in the
classroom.
5. Eating, drinking or smoking is not permitted in the laboratory.
6. You must read the laboratory safety rules before doing any of the lab exercise.
7. The lab safety release form must be signed during the first lab session.
2
8. EXAMS: Exams will consist of multiple choices, fill in the blanks, matching and essay
questions based on materials covered in the classroom. The following guidelines will
govern all exams:
 The students will not be allowed to leave the classroom before completing an
exam.
 Anyone arriving late will not be allowed to take an exam if any student has
completed the exam and left the classroom.
 All lecture exams will be timed. Students arriving late will not be given extra time
to complete an exam.
 Students may not use dictionaries or other aids during the exam.
 Both lab exams are mandatory. If you miss a lab exam, you will receive a zero in
the exam.
 No make-up exams will be given.
9. Grades will not be curved and cheating will not be tolerated. The first time a student is
caught cheating on an exam or an assignment he/she will receive a zero for that exam or
assignment. For a second offense, the student will receive a grade of "F" for the course. A
zero will be assigned to any work that is plagiarized. Cheating is defined as giving or
receiving, offering or soliciting information or using prepared material without
permission or proper documentation. Please review the System’s policy on cheating in
the STUDENT HANDBOOK.
10. Lab reports are an important part of the course and are due upon completion of the
experiments. They will be checked and graded.
Students With Disability
Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric,
vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must
contact the Disability Services Office at Central College, Room LHSB 106 (713718-6164).
Classroom Conduct
All students in HCC courses are required to follow all HCC Policies & Procedures,
the Student Code of Conduct, the Student Handbook, and relevant sections of the
Texas Education Code when interacting and communicating with faculty and fellow
students. Students who violate these policies and guidelines will be subject to
disciplinary action that could include denial of access to the course or be removed
from the class.
HCC Course Withdrawal Policy
An instructor will no longer give any student a grade of “W” after the official drop
date (4/21). The Texas Legislature passed a law limiting first time entering
freshmen to no more than SIX total course withdrawals throughout their
educational career in obtaining a certificate and/or degree.
Course Repeater Policy
Beginning in the Fall 2006, students who repeat a course for a third or more time
3
will be charged a tuition/fee of $50/credit hour at HCC and other Texas public
colleges and universities. Please ask your instructor and/or counselor about
opportunities for tutoring/other assistance prior to considering course withdrawal or
if you are not receiving passing grades.
International Students Policy
Receiving a W in a course may affect the status of your student Visa. Once a “W” is
given for the course, it will not be changed to an F because of the visa
consideration. You should also know that since January 1, 2003, International
Students are restricted in the number of distance education courses that they may
take during each semester. ONLY ONE online/distance education class may be
counted towards the enrollment requirement for International Students per semester.
Please contact the International Student Office at 713-718-8520 if you have any
questions about your visa status and other transfer issues.
