K-Nect has been independently tested to show a positive correlation with utilization and increases in student achievement. The system is comprised of the following functional capabilities: • Social Networking enables students to communicate asynchronously or synchronously. Students have access to a closed instant messaging system and blogs. The social networking system empowers students to solicit help from other peers regardless of the time of day or location. • Integrated Curriculum developed through partnerships with Florida State University and Math Forum with special focus placed on Algebra and Geometry. The system will support all subject areas but will require the integration of 3 rd party content for nonmathematics content. • Assessment and Reporting empowers teachers to track all usage data on the device. Furthermore, the assessment system enables teachers to track proficiency in real time utilizing existing assessment items or creating their own. • Content Creation Tools enable students to create shareable resources such as videos, PPT, pictures, and MP3 (audio tracks). These tools empower students to achieve an individualized learning process both inside and outside the classroom. • Student Monitoring Tools allow teachers to confirm that devices are being used for instructional purposes. Teachers can view student devices in real-time and also enable and disable any feature set available on the mobile device (i.e,, camera, browser, instant messaging) • Clickr and Podcasting tools allow teachers to turn any mobile device into an interactive response system and record and archive lectures or important lessons.
