Write down some witty stories and comments on the Water Camp to put in the little book Mrs McQueen and I are making about the junior projects (Night of
Notables, Water Project, Australia Project).
Write yourself a report on the report blank I have given you. Give yourself credit and give yourself blame - in the right proportions. (Then read my report for you and see if you agree with me on the credit/blame ledger. Usually I am kinder to my students than they are to themselves.)
The title of this task is from a poem by the great American poet, Walt Whitman. Watching "Geri's Game" reminded me of it. It's rather a long poem; this line comes from Section 51. Ouch! Fortunately for you I am only asking you to read five lines of it.
Then you must contemplate what contradictions exist within you , what multitudes of ideas, dreams and conflicting viewpoints jostle you as you strive to create your future from the glowing embers of your past, and how you hope to gather all your roles and quirks together in an integrated whole, in order to make an assault on your future.
I can almost hear you all hyperventilating as I wrote that paragraph above for you. Here are several questions that might simplify this topic for you...
If you were playing a game of chess against yourself, what different characters might emerge from your single identity?
If you have arguments within yourself, or tugs of war, what form do they take?
If, like me, you wanted to create an alter ego for a blog, as I have created Mrs Humpty, what characteristics would you give your character? Would he or she be braver, bossier or cleverer than you? Would he or she embarrass you in public, say things you would never say, or do things you would never contemplate? Would he or she threaten to take you over or would you keep your alter ego firmly in check?
What are some characteristics that you feel you possess that are rarely seen by others, that you tend to hide or show only to a few people? How are these characteristics different from the self you usually display?
If you had to make a film in which you and your alter ego were both characters, how might the two of you act differently? alter ego : a person's second self or an intimate friend
The past and present wilt--I have fill'd them, emptied them.
And proceed to fill my next fold of the future.
...
Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)
