Due December 2, 2015 Ionic and covalent Bonding Poster This is a major (summative) grade. Projects turned in late will have 30 points per day deducted as per the posted grading policy. If a project is turned in early, 10 bonus points will be awarded. In order to receive full credit, the following items must be on your poster. Ionic Bonding : 1. Definition of an ionic bond. 2. What types of atoms are held together in an ionic bond. 3. 2 examples of ionic bonds hand drawn out showing exactly what is happening with the electrons in a bond. Don’t forget the compound names. 4. Definition of a crystal lattice and an explanation of why ionic bonds form them. 5. A 3d model of a crystal lattice attached to your poster. 6. Definition of a polyatomic ion and at least 3 examples. 7. An explanation of how to name ionic compounds and at least 5 examples, including polyatomic ions and transition metals. Covalent Bonding 1. Definition of a covalent bond, including polar covalent and nonpolar covalent. 2. What types of atoms are held together in a covalent bond. 3. 2 examples of covalent bonds using hand drawn Lewis Dot structures to show what exactly is happening with the electrons. (use different colors for different atoms.) 4. Explanation of single, double and triple bonds. 5. A Lewis dot structure of a molecule with a single bond, one with a double bond and one with a triple bond. Don’t forget compound names. 6. Explanation of VSEPR and the 5 different shapes molecules can make. Give and hand-draw an example of each. 7. Explain what molecular polarity is and how it works (think electronegativity). Give and handdraw 2 molecular examples, one being a polar molecule and one nonpolar. 8. For the molecule _______________________, show the following information: Type of bond Name of molecule Lewis dot structure 3-D structural formula Label each bond as polar or nonpolar Is the overall molecule polar or nonpolar? What type of intermolecular force is holding the molecules of this substance together? Rubric for Ionic and Covalent Bonding Poser.
