How do you think roads helped the Romans?
Wars with Carthage



Carthage was a city-state located in North Africa,
which became very powerful. It had a large,
powerful navy and one of the strongest armies in
the ancient world.
Beginning in 264 BC, Rome and Carthage began a
series of three destructive wars called the Punic
Wars.
Altogether, the Punic Wars lasted 120 years. Rome
won all three.




The second war was the most destructive.
A Carthaginian general named Hannibal launched
an invasion from Spain across the snowy Alps with a
heard of elephants.
Rome was saved when a general named Scipio
attacked Carthage. Hannibal had to rush home, but
it was too late. Carthage was defeated.
50 years later, the Romans captured Carthage
again in the third war.

Problems at Home



Vast wealth poured into Rome. Patricians got
wealthier, while the average Roman gained very
little. Poverty was growing.
One way to gain wealth is through conquest. One
of the most famous generals, Julius Caesar, lead a
great conquest.
Caesar eventually took control of Rome and was
made ruler for life.
 Patricians
feared his power and stabbed him to death
on the senate floor.


After Caesar’s death, a struggle for power began
and a civil war broke out.
The Roman Republic was at its end.
