Wars with Carthage Carthage was a city-state located in North Africa, which became very powerful. It had a large, powerful navy and one of the strongest armies in the ancient world. Beginning in 264 BC, Rome and Carthage began a series of three destructive wars called the Punic Wars. Altogether, the Punic Wars lasted 120 years. Rome won all three. The second war was the most destructive. A Carthaginian general named Hannibal launched an invasion from Spain across the snowy Alps with a heard of elephants. Rome was saved when a general named Scipio attacked Carthage. Hannibal had to rush home, but it was too late. Patricians got wealthier, while the average Roman gained very little. Poverty was growing. One way to gain wealth is through conquest. One of the most famous generals, Julius Caesar, lead a great conquest. Caesar eventually took control of Rome and was made ruler for life. Patricians feared his power and stabbed him to death on the senate floor. After Caesar’s death, a struggle for power began and a civil war broke out. The Roman Republic was at its end.
