HAEMOPHILIA/HAEMATOLOGY UNIT
WARD 84 OPD RMCH
0161 701 8444
The unit is a supra regional centre covering the North
West of England. The unit sees children with a variety
of haematological disorders including Bleeding
disorders, Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Anaemia. The
majority of the work carried out in unit is undertaken by
the specialist nurses and therefore mainly nurse led.
However the nurses work very closely in collaboration
with the Haemophilia Director, consultant colleagues
and other members of the multi disciplinary team.
The staff also liaise with a number of other disciplines
e.g. schools and community nurses. The specialist
nurses each have their own areas of responsibility and
the lead nurse for the differing conditions seen within
the unit.
Our nurse led service is based upon the following:
 Open access
 Complement consultant clinics
 Regular liaison with the multidisciplinary team
 Reduction of waiting time
 Patients seen on a regular basis
 Close liaison with community teams/home
delivery firms
 Continuity of Care
 Holistic cares
There are many learning opportunities within the unit,
which the student is encouraged to participate in fully.
There are many resources within the unit, including
information, books, CD ROMs and DVD’s. Access to
the Internet is also available and the student may
continue with their university studies when there are
quiet periods. A mentor will be assigned to you for your
allocation within the unit. However all staff are
available to help you throughout your placement.

Placement Philosophy
We aim to provide the highest standard of nursing care
within the available resources, in a therapeutic, relaxed
and friendly atmosphere, irrespective of the child’s
race, religion and disability in accordance with
guidelines in the Patient’s Charter.
To provide continuity of care, support, advice and
reassurance to children and their families or carers,
offering them the maximum opportunity to participate in
their care, diagnosis and treatment of the disorder
under the guidance of a named nurse.
To minimise hospitalisation, maintain self-respect and
independence. We encourage the family to develop
responsibility for the care of their child and to
encourage the young adult to take care of him/herself,
thereby promoting integration into a normal society.
We aim to work closely with other disciplines for the
benefit of the children and their families and to prevent
any harm befalling them by any error or omission on
our part.
