This will be a hybrid course which will meet each week for 2 ½ to 3 hours to discuss the assigned readings. Students will be expected to commit the rest of the time outside of each class toward reading and blackboard assignments. Prerequisite: ENGL 1301- Composition and Rhetoric Required Textbook and Resources: Booth, Allison. J. Paul Hunter. Kelly J. Mays. The Norton Introduction to Literature: Shorter Ninth Edition. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. New York, NY 2006. Course Outcome Competencies: Through this course, students will study the different aspects of composition and reading. There will be discussion of various styles of literature and poetry. In addition, students will become more familiar with the text through creative, blackboard assignments. At the end of the course, students will be able to identify the different components that make up fiction, poetry, and drama. They will be able to analyze the content of the reading assignments. Finally, they will be able to participate in constructive discussion about reader interpretations. Attendance Requirements: As stated in the Wayland Catalog, students enrolled at one of the University’s external campuses should make every effort to attend all class meetings. All absences must be explained to the instructor, who will then determine whether the omitted work may be made up. When a student reaches that number of absences considered by the instructor to be excessive, the instructor will so advise the student and file an unsatisfactory progress report with the campus executive director. Any student who misses 25 percent or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive a grade of F in the course. Additional attendance policies for each course, as defined by the instructor in the course syllabus, are considered a part of the University’s attendance policy. Documentation of a disability must accompany any request for accommodations.” Course Requirements and Grading Criteria: There will be six blackboard assignments which will involve different writing activities. These activities will enable students to interpret and comprehend the assigned readings through their own point of view. There will be three writing assignments which will include; two 4-5 page papers and one 10-12 page paper. These papers will focus on the different components and styles of the assigned readings. They will enable students to interpret; themes, symbolism, setting, and character actions. Readings; “Sonny’s Blues” and “The Country Husband” Week 2: “Fiction (Narration and Characters)” Discussion of the significant roles of characters in stories and identifying point of view. Readings; “The Cask of Amontillado” and “Why I Live at the P.O.” Blackboard 1 is due. Week 3: “Fiction (Symbolism)” Discussion of the symbolic elements found within the readings. Readings; “A Pair of Tickets” and “A Wall of Fire Rising” Paper 1 is due. Week 4: “Poetry (Understanding Poetic Content/ Styles of Poetry)” Discussion of poetic interpretation which includes; metaphors, symbolism, and themes. Readings; “The River Merchant’s Wife: A Letter,” “123rd Rap Street,” “A Last Confession,” “Barbie Doll,” and “We Real Cool” Blackboard 2 is due. Week 5: “Poetry (Details, Descriptions, and Symbolism)” Discussion how details add meaning to the content of the poetry. Readings; “The Flea,” “Peeling and Orange,” “A Description of the Morning,” “In Westminster Abbey,” Blackboard 3 is due. Week 6: “Poetry (Gender and Culture Roles)” Discussion on identifying gender and cultural themes in poetry. Readings; “Exchanging Hats,” “Paper Matches,” “Africa,” “How it Feels to Be Colored Me,” and “Harlem” Blackboard 4 is due. Week 7: “Drama” Discussion on the elements of theatrical literature. Reading: “A Doll House.” Paper 2 is due. Week 8: “Drama” Discussion on the elements of theatrical literature. Reading; “A Doll House.” Blackboard 5 is due. Week 9: “Drama” Discussion on how stories written from the stage are similar and different to other works of literature. Reading; “A Raisin in the Sun” Blackboard 6 is due. Week 10: “Drama” Discussion of “A Raisin in the Sun” and review of the various components of reading comprehension learned throughout the course. Final Paper is due. Academic dishonesty in any form (i.e. plagiarism or cheating) is unacceptable and will result in an automatic zero for this course. Attendance is very important for this class. If there is an emergency please contact me as soon as possible before the beginning of class. We are required according to Wayland Baptist University guidelines to meet for 45 hours during this 10 week session so it is imperative that you attend every class.
